No, really, it is not.

Lets have a look at the definition of theft by the Cambridge Dictionary (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/theft)

"(the act of) dishonestly taking something that belongs to someone else and keeping it"

By "keeping it" we understand that, as soon as we commit the theft, the owner is no longer in position of legitimally making use of property.

Please let me elaborate with an example. Lets say you have an old vintage electric guitar which you like very much. If I take this guitar from you, the very act of physically taking it away, excludes you from the right of the property (and therefore, the rights of using it).

However, imagine I could just copy every single bit of that guitar and make an exact copy of it, you would still have your guitar, wouldn´t you ?

This is exactly the case of software piracy, you are basically making a copy of an legitimately original intelectual property, but you are not taking this property away from the owner!


Wake up everybody, do not let the Establishment fool you, Piracy is not Theft.
