## Middle East crisis "meddles" in Latin American politics

Honduras, whose president has been among the most vocal in the region denouncing the dire consequences of Jerusalem's advance against Gaza, has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel. The Central American country's Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular and Migratory Affairs made the announcement, pointing to the deterioration of the Palestinian crisis. "The situation is delicate. Our Ambassador was withdrawn due to attacks on Palestinian civilians in Gaza," [said Tony Garcia](https://www.swissinfo.ch/spa/honduras-retira-a-su-embajador-en-israel-por-ataques-a-civiles-en-la-franja-de-gaza/75742634) on Sunday. Authorities in the Gaza Strip speak of some 33,600 dead since Israel began its disproportionate and inhumane retaliation for the Hamas attack on October 7. Two-thirds of this figure would correspond to women and children. In November, Xiomara Castro [had already called for consultations](https://apnews.com/world-news/general-news-feaa2d0cdfbe65768d1baf0fb394db2c) with the head of the country's diplomatic representation in Israel "given the grave humanitarian situation suffered by the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip", accusing the Netanyahu government of committing genocide.
Meanwhile, Javier Milei [headed a meeting](https://www.swissinfo.ch/spa/milei-encabeza-reunión-del-ejecutivo-al-llegar-a-argentina-por-la-crisis-en-oriente-medio/75742617) with his ministerial cabinet this Sunday to address the situation generated by Iran's attack last Saturday against Israel—whom the Argentine president defends without regard or objection. Netanyahu's ambassador in Buenos Aires participated in the meeting and addressed the nation through a recorded message together with the presidential spokesman. However, the Argentine government had reinforced since Friday all the important spaces for the Jewish community in the country, according to the broadcasting of the LN+ channel, where, by the way, *never* the dead in Palestine are mentioned, and neither is Israel's responsibility in the attack against the Iranian consulate in Syria discussed. The journalist Luis Majul, always very solicitous to "explain" and "makeup" Milei's political management, went so far as to justify not holding a press conference last Sunday after the emergency meeting. That is to say, the journalist reached the absurdity of accepting and justifying that his colleagues could not inquire about how much the liberals were discussing in Rivadavia Street.
Last week, in another fact that exemplifies the efforts of the Government of La Libertad Avanza to rewrite Argentine history, a court ruling held Teheran and Hezbollah responsible for the attack—some 30 years ago—against the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA in Spanish), which left 85 dead and is considered to be the worst ever happened in the country. There has long been speculation that former President Cristina Fernández covered up Iran's responsibility, and there are certainly [very worrying signs](https://www.swissinfo.ch/spa/claves-del-%27caso-amia%27-en-argentina/75624546) in this regard, such as the death—at a rather opportune moment for her—of a prosecutor who was directly denouncing her. Whether or not, politically, raising all this dust is healthy for the "cultural battle" waged by the "libertarians", and they have declared through Security Minister Patricia Bullrich that "[they] will work at full speed with the Ministry of Justice (...) It is time for those people [responsible for the bombing] to be tried by the Argentine justice system". The idea is to advance a "[trial in absentia](https://www.swissinfo.ch/spa/argentina-afrontará-reformas-para-promover-un-%27juicio-en-ausencia%27-en-el-%27caso-amia%27/75629014)", for which reforms to the current legislation are necessary. After applauding the judicial move, Israel asked Argentina to declare the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [as a terrorist organization](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/agencias/israel-pide-a-argentina-que-declare-a-la-guardia-revolucionaria-irani-como-grupo-terrorista-nid12042024/), something it has been publicly demanding from other allies.
## What is happening in Venezuela?

Although it did not guarantee her any success, a serious mistake made by María Corina Machado was not to accept in time that she did not fit in the Venezuelan electoral process. Now the same thing is happening to her, obsessed with the lost battle of pushing for a substitute with no future either, even if the polls tell us that any of them would knock out Maduro without even getting into the ring. Although the leader of Vente Venezuela [has requested a meeting](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/agencias/machado-solicita-reunion-de-la-plataforma-opositora-incluido-rosales-para-tantear-opciones-en-nid15042024/) to reach possible agreements with other opposition forces that did manage to nominate candidates. The problem is that the primaries on which Machado relies to defend her legitimacy as a candidate—and so dispute her disqualification—[were challenged](https://apnews.com/world-news/general-news-bdaffc700c42474eb6bdeeb8d33c52f7) by the Public Prosecutor's Office, and Chavismo does not cease to have good legal arguments in its favor, as I have stated here on several occasions. Pure and simple Magna Carta. Therefore, nothing coming from Machado will be accepted by the institutionality that, like it or not, filters Venezuelan politics. Then there is the chronic lack of unity of the opposition and the serious political and administrative mistakes made by its main actors, including Maria Corina encouraging foreign intervention.

![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmVnN74bwvF7NcLUCWtSXynyMhQjTFRDjQQi6A8qfxNa69/hrxblekn.jpeg)Nicolás Maduro ([source](https://twitter.com/Voz_US/status/1780039796972527915)).

"Absent progress by Maduro and his representatives in terms of implementing the road map's provisions, the United States will not renew the license when it expires on April 18, 2024", [said this Monday](https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/us-says-it-will-not-renew-easing-venezuela-oil-sanctions-unless-progress-made-2024-04-15/) from Foggy Bottom about the suspension of the sanctions that they agreed with Caracas as an incentive for holding "competitive elections". In any case, the Biden administration is not expected to return to the "maximum pressure policy" imposed by Donald Trump, and instead shuffles options such as banning the use of the dollar in transactions related to oil sales. The migration dynamic is also pressuring the White House in these deliberations, as stifling the Venezuelan economy means fueling a crisis that has multidimensional repercussions for the Democrats' chances in the November elections. So "[the] US government looks a little more interested in alleviating sanctions than the sanctioned party", [says](https://www.argusmedia.com/en/news-and-insights/latest-market-news/2557631-stakes-look-low-in-washington-s-venezuela-dilemma) an economist from the Venezuelan capital. Have Biden people indicated to Machado that she has no choice but to take advantage of the little space that Chavism has made available?
## The quick regional roundup

- Relatives of the 43 students who disappeared in 2014 in Guerrero, Mexico, [have threatened to boycott the electoral process](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/agencias/familias-de-los-normalistas-de-ayotzinapa-piden-boicotear-el-proceso-electoral-en-mexico-nid15042024/) because the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has not fulfilled its promise to clear up the case. I usually criticize the president for relativizing the acts of violence that occur daily in the Aztec nation, but it is also fair to recognize that the leader of MORENA came to power four years after the young men of Ayotzinapa had been ground up in the grinder of organized crime, in potential alliance with corrupt police and officials. "If there is no dialogue, the electoral celebration will be tarnished with the voice of Ayotzinapa, demanding truth and justice for the 43," the relatives warn. That 10 years later they have no response is certainly shameful, but anyway they seem to be instrumentalized by some sectors opposed to AMLO.
- X's lawyers have conveyed to the highest Brazilian judicial authority that the platform will comply with "all the sentences issued by the judiciary" of the South American giant, according to [an exclusive Reuters dispatch](https://www.lanacion.com.ar/agencias/red-social-x-da-marcha-atras-y-comunica-a-tribunal-brasileno-que-acatara-las-sentencias-nid15042024/) released today. The agency relies on a letter addressed to the controversial judge Alexandre de Moraes, who lashed out at Musk when the latter publicly disputed and seemed to disdain certain judicial measures related to X. The case involves the blocking of accounts accused of disseminating false information about the Brazilian electoral process or encouraging actions against the country's political institutions. Both fronts are related to ongoing investigations against former president Jair Bolsonaro. "As already communicated to the federal police, X Brazil informs that all orders issued by this Supreme Court and by the Superior Electoral Court will continue to be fully complied with by X Corp," the company told Moraes. Why did Elon bend?
