Every day, when I came across the news about Mariupol and Azovstal, I did not think about what this metallurgical plant looked like, what its history was before the full-scale war, what the area was, what was produced there and, in general, what it could be known to the whole world, in addition to the fact that thousands of people were hiding there from russian missiles.
> Кожного дня, коли я наштовхувалась на новини про Маріуполь та Азовсталь я не задумувалась над тим, який вигляд має цей металургійний завод, яка історія його до повномасштабної війни, яка площа, що саме там виготовлялось і, взагалі, чим він може бути відомим всьому світу, крім того, що там переховувались тисячі людей від російських ракет.
So that the topic of our prisoners from there is not forgotten, so that people do not forget about this large-scale tragedy and the topic of Azovstal does not disappear from the information space, I decided to make a series of posts about this plant, about its defence, about the people who were there.

So, today I will tell about the very history of Azovstal as a metallurgical plant. The idea of creating this enterprise took place on February 2, 1930, and already in 1933 it produced its first pig iron, and since then the plant "grew" and became more powerful in terms of productivity and production of various types of rolled metal.

As of the pre-war period, Azovstal was a monopoly in Ukraine for the production of several types of metals, because there is simply no other similar plant in our country that has such capacity. The plant is the only Ukrainian producer of high-quality material for shipbuilding, energy and special engineering, and bridge construction. Also, Azovstal was the only one in Ukraine to manufacture railway rails of various types, large-diameter pipes for gas and oil pipelines, etc.

Its goods were exported to more than 30 countries. Just so you understand, not only the rails of Ukrainian railway tracks are made of Azovstal metal, but also The Shard skyscraper in London, Hudson Yards in Manhattan, the glass bridge in Kyiv, and even the Chornobyl sarcophagus.

Now imagine the scale of Azovstal. I will admit right away that it will be quite difficult and you will definitely be shocked. The approximate area of the plant is 1,000 hectares or 10 square kilometres. For example, on the territory of Azovstal, you can place 5 principalities of Monaco or 1000 football fields. By and large, it was a city within a city.

About 11,000 people worked there, working in 36 structural divisions (workshops, administrative buildings), and practically every resident of Mariupol was connected to this plant in one way or another. Everyone could find a relative or friend who worked there.
> Там працювало близько 11 тисяч людей, що працювали у 36 структурних підрозділах (цехи, адміністративні будівлі) і практично кожен житель Маріуполя так чи інакше був пов'язаний з цим комбінатом. В кожного міг знайтись родич чи друг, який там працював.
And now I will answer the question of where people could hide during active hostilities. The fact is that during the construction of the plant, the Soviet Union lived in conditions of permanent preparation for war, so this enterprise, like all others of that time, was built, looking back at the probability of hostilities - with mandatory bomb shelters that had to withstand a serious load.
> А тепер відповім на питання де ж там люди могли ховатись під час активних бойових дій. Вся справа в тому, що при будівництві заводу Радянський Союз жив в умовах перманентної підготовки до війни, тому це підприємство, як і всі інші того часу, споруджували, озираючись на ймовірність бойових дій — з обов'язковими бомбосховищами, які мали витримувати серйозне навантаження.
So, in each division, under each separate building, there were 1-2 bomb shelters, which were deep underground, and had thick walls and double ventilation. They were designed for artillery and air strikes. And according to all standards, they had to accommodate the daily rate of workers - about 5 thousand people.
> Так, в кожному підрозділі, під кожною окремою будівлею було 1-2 бомбосховища, котрі знаходились глибоко під землею, мали товсті стіни та подвійну вентиляцію. Вони були розраховані на артилерійські та авіаційні удари. І згідно із усіма стандартами повинні були вміщувати в собі денну норму працівників - близько 5 тисяч осіб.
In 2014, when russia encroached on our territory, for the first time on the territory of the plant, all bomb shelters were inspected and put in proper condition, as well as supplies of dry rations and water were organized. At the same time, according to the regulations, such a stock should be for 7 days, but the plant provided all this for 14 days.
> В 2014 році, коли росія зазіхнулась на нашу територію вперше на території заводу провели перевірку всіх бомбосховищ та привели їх в належний стан, а також організували запаси сухпайків та води. При цьому згідно із нормативами такий запас повинен бути на 7 днів, проте комбінат забезпечив це все на 14 днів.
I will explain why all this was done. Of course, in order to protect the workers, who, in the event of the start of active hostilities, had to spend at least 7 days on the territory of the plant. The fact is that an enterprise of this type cannot be stopped by simply pressing a button. This is a complex and long process and leaving everything unattended or stopping incorrectly means a huge disaster.
> Поясню для чого це все робилось. Звичайно, для того щоб захистити працівників, котрі у випадку початку активних військових дій повинні були провести на території заводу мінімум 7 днів. Справа в тому, що підприємство такого типу неможливо зупинити просто натиснувши на одну кнопку. Це складний та тривалий процес і залишити все без нагляду або зупинити неправильно означає величезну катастрофу.
This is what started after February 24, when it became clear what was happening in Ukraine. Workers came to work every day and stopped Azovstal. By the way, during the entire history, which is 89 years, the Marteniv and Azovstal blast furnaces were stopped only in 1941, during the German-Soviet war. In September 1943, when the Germans were retreating, they blew up all the blast furnaces. However, two years later, the plant resumed work. Unfortunately, today the Azovstal plant is just history because it practically does not exist. russia cynically destroyed it and declared that it would completely destroy the surviving buildings.
> Саме це почалось після 24 лютого, коли стало зрозуміло, що відбувається в Україні. Працівники приходили щодня на роботу та зупиняли Азовсталь. До речі, за всю історію, а це 89 років, мартенівські та доменні печі «Азовсталі» зупиняли лише в 1941-му, під час німецько-радянської війни. У вересні 1943 року, коли німці відступали, вони підірвали всі доменні печі. Проте вже через два роки комбінат відновив роботу. На жаль, на сьогоднішній день завод Азовсталь це просто історія, адже практично його не існує. росія цинічно знищила його та заявила, що повністю зруйнує вцілілі будівлі.
