What is the "Home Run" for investment in Bitcoin? That was the question the Bitcoin Foundation guy who chaired a panel at the last minute and therefore I can't identify immediately has asked. What are all these people aiming for? When will we know we've won? Using sporting metaphors isn't really my thing because it all gets a bit "inside baseball" pretty quickly. But it does feel like it's all up in the air. Either nobody here knows or perhaps nobody can see beyond the present and very near future.

The cooky thing on the edges that people were messing with late in 2006 was a thing called twttr that had recently been rebranded when they had managed to get their hands on the domain name "twitter.com". I joined on 13 December 2006 and felt late to the party - it was fun but surely everything had been done already and the only thing left was to work out how to monetise blogging. This twitter would be an interesting toy for those of us who like new and shiny but certainly not something that would have it's regular users in the hundreds of millions. Nobody knew that the "success" would look the way it does today, not even (actually *especially* not) those who were closest and deepest in. So is there something cooky on the edges that people are dismissing or ignoring or just doesn't have enough traction yet to be exciting?

I remember going to LeWeb in 2008 - it was cold, really cold. The heating wasn't working and it was snowing outside and at the end of the session nobody could get a cab. The outcome of that was Uber - that, according to starup lore is where Travis had his lightbulb moment and now we're all riding around in minicabs without having to call a woman called Audrey who sits shouting into a radio all day long. Who's having that experience today? Who's getting pumped up and is open-minded and well-connected enough to make something amazing happen that no-one was expecting. And while we're at it, who goes to a conference on a Sunday, especially one that has long speeches and panels and ra-ra cheerleading for Bitcoin. Where's the real action going on here, who's talking to whom and what will happen?

Roger Ver just bounced on stage as a cheerleader for Bitcoin but more importantly for "Economic Freedom" Economic Freedom, capital E, capital F, according to Roger is what distinguishes Hong Kong from Havana it's what makes countries the sort of place you'd want to live in and you'd want to raise a family in - Switzerland, Yay! North Korea Boo! Anyone can start a business without interference from "men in suits who write things on paper in buildings with flags outside them". So great! Now your twelve-year-old daughter can exercise her Economic Freedom by starting a business taking her clothes off via webcam for a global crowd of creeps taking direct payments in bitcoin *and* with a sideline in blackmailing those of her "clients" who don't get the difference between pseudonymous and anonymous. Hurrah!

I'm at the [Blockchain:Money Conference](https://conference.bitcoin.com/) in London today and tomorrow - if you're around do come and say hello
