Me and ADHD
![IMG_2335.JPG](https://images.hive.blog/DQmT9VS9FRvouvLJDJfyi8NUsBrqqcEtq4mnVHU5MzfACXR/IMG_2335.JPG)

This week I started taking medication for a condition that you don't normally associate with fifty-something-year-old men. During the last year, it's become clear to me as all the excuses for distraction fell away that there was something else going on that tools, techniques, spiritual work and beating myself up weren't changing. I started reading up on ADHD - my first wife was diagnosed herself in her early fifties I think and she always said "You've got it too, y'bastard" and reading medical articles together with ADHD twitter etc, I could see that many of the characteristics are things that have been with me since childhood, which seems in itself to be a good indicator that it's not just getting old and forgetful or incipient early-onset dementia.

So I got an appointment with a psychiatrist and went through the assessment. That was just before Christmas. It's taken this long for me to start on medication, not because I was twitchy about it, but because there's apparently been a big uptick in diagnoses and the nurses qualified to supervise titration (adjusting dosage to get it right) are in short supply, so I've been held in a queue (yes one of the characteristics can be impatience!)

It's early days. Today is day 6 of the first, minimum dosage. I took anti-depressants for a short while about fifteen years ago and those took two weeks to even start to make a difference. This was not like that. I've been aware that I'm on *something* since day 1. I'm not speeding wildly, but there are changes. And I want to write about them as they go along, rather than trying to make sense later. I think I'm going to feel differently again in a couple of days when I double my dosage. One thing I feel ready to do again is to blog, so here I am.

ADHD medicine is speed. I took it for many years, trust me it will do more harm than good. What kind of productivity are you looking for in your 50's? ADHD pharma drugs are bad, I took them for almost 10 years before I finally gave up and I feel like I am free. I like my adhd mind much more than my non-emotional hyper state. There are natural ways you can balance your serotonin

I'm sure you mean to help, we're all on different paths - this isn't something I've gone into blindly and on impulse, I know my shit.

I'm glad to hear you feel free at the moment. So do I.

And when you make it to your 50s I expect you'll understand that even if your definition of productivity changes, you're not ready to lie down and die just yet.

Sorry looking back at my comment it is fairly opinionated. I am sure you have done your due diligence. It was a necessary evil for me during some times in my life, to which without it, I'm sure I wouldn't be where I am now. One of those things that's hard to balance I guess. I no longer need it, but I won't be surprised if another time in my life comes where I try and rationalize it's use.

Well done to you for writing about it! I think the huge rise in diagnoses is due to people of our age simply being written off at school as being daydreamers and being too lazy to be bothered and has only been shown to be a genuine and measurable illness in recent years.
Obviously you've tried therapy yourself knowing in your heart there has been something wrong and are now using Delmosart which I hope proves to big aid to your daily life.
Best wishes with it and I look forward to reading about your progress
PS Did you read the leaflet with the medicine carefully? There is one interesting, rare, but very 'hard' side effect ;-)

Thanks. It's helping so far, I feel like I've got my mojo back in ways I hadn't expected so quickly. And yes, I've done my reading and haven't noticed any unwelcome side-effects so far!

Hope it goes okay for you Lloyd. I think we all deviate from 'normal' in some way and I suspect I could be diagnosed with something, but I'm not sure it's causing me problems for now. I am not sure I want to start reading about it as that may convince me I am worse than I am. Anyway, if drugs can make you function better then go for it. I am conscious that various aspects of my health are on a downward slide now as I'm a similar age to you. I hope to have many more productive years and will do what I think is prudent to optimise them.

Stay well.
