If you have ever driven around Hawaii and wondered why certain places have waves that you can surf, hopefully this picture can feed your curiosity. The waves break on the reef and curl into the channel. The spot on the left is typically a left breaking wave and the one on the right is a right breaking wave. People go both ways, but that is the dominant direction of each peak. I was really surprised when I flew my drone up high enough to see how defined the reef was here.
