How to create a new topic?

<p>Anybody know how to create a new topic category as they appear on the right side of the screen? I've searched through the long list and don't see what I'm looking for. Do some tags get deep-sixed? Any way to "create" a new one?</p>

Thanks for the reply. Ok... I've posted this past week into a tag I started with called, #prepping. It don't show up anywhere. Can't select it to see if others are posting there either.

You can just add the topic to your tag and once you submit the story you can click the topic and see everyone that is also under it. If there is nothing but your post...congrats you were the first. 😉

Thanks for the reply. For the past week that's what I've been doing. Posting with #prepping as my first tag. It doesn't show up in the list and I can't tell if anyone else is posting there either.

Any luck with info on creating a "new" topic? I also posted a intervention about a new topic titled "Expats" but have received no how-to info nor has it hit the topic list. Conflused.

On the right side are just the most active tags. 

The first tag you use in your article is a sort of anchor, in that category the article will be saved (you can change the tag but the old will still be in the URL - happened to me with a misspelled politics). The other tags can be edited later without problems. 

So if you want to create a new category, make that as your first tag. It may work with 2nd 3rd etc tag but I don't know. 
First works, that is why you sometimes get strange categories or with wrong spelling.

Thanks for the reply. @darkflame found it under https://steemit.com/trending/prepping. Still not sure why it didn't get its own category/tag instead of becoming a sub-category under #trending. Any ideas? Or how to set it free on its own?
