**An Ode to Hanuman
(Inspired by the Hanuman Chalisa)**

glory to you hanuman; baba hanuman.
you are the ocean of wisdom and virtue, hanuman.
hail to the lord of the monkeys; it's baba hanuman.
the illuminator of the three worlds and ram's
emissary; an abode of matchless power,
anjani’s son of the wind and also our
great hero; mighty as a thunderbolt; the
companion of good, remover of the negativity.

golden hued and splendidly trimmed;
with heavy earrings and curly locks - the world's dimmed,
but in your hands shine mace and a banner;
a sacred thread of munja grass which enhances your manner.
you are shiva’s incarnation and kesari’s son –
your glory is renowned throughout the world and your wisdom,
for you are the supremely wise, virtuous and clever.
you're intent on ram’s work and you will be forever.
you delight in hearing of the lord’s deeds.
ram, lakshman and sita are your heart's seeds.

you appeared to sita in a tiny form,
burning down lanka in awesome guise just like a storm,
and taking on a dreadful form, you slaughtered the demons,
completing lord ram’s mission, and then by bringing
the life-giving sajivana herb, you revived
lakshman; shri ram was glad he was alive.

greatly did the lord of raghus praise you by saying,
that you yourself are as dear to him as his brother. saying
that thousands of mouths sing your praise, sita’s lord
drew you to himself; you did not bring yourself toward
him. no, and now sanak and all the sages,
gods, brahma, great saints, narada, all rage as
sharada, and king of the serpents, and kubera,
yama, and the guardians of the quadrants cannot stare at
you just like the poets and scholars – they can't express
your glory, for your story is one to impress.

you rendered great service to sugriva;
introducing him to lord ram, you would give him a
glimpse of what kingship is; and vibhishana
heeded your counsel and of the great lanka,
you became the lord as the world knows and as they pray,
and even though the sun is millions of miles away,
you swallowed it, thinking it to be a fruit.
holding the lord’s ring in your mouth, you,
in no surprise, leapt right over the ocean.

every hard task, with a bit of right devotion,
becomes easy by your grace. you guard the door
of ram’s abode, meaning no one can explore
his love without passing you, and taking refuge in
you, one finds complete contentment; no sin.
those you protect know naught of fear.
you alone can withstand your own appear-
ance, and the three worlds; they all tremble at your roar.
the mere utterance of your name shuts the door
for ghosts and goblins, even sickness and all sorts of pain
get eradicated by the repetition of your divine name.

those who keep you close and remember you in thought
know about pain, sorrow and affliction naught.
you carry out the work of ram, the mighty ascetic,
gifting those who yearn for anything with a poetic
abundance; you are renowned around the earth.
a darling of ram; he knows you well and knows your worth,
and so do all the saints and sages; you guard them well,
and, too, destroy the demons; yours truly, farewell.

by janaki's boon, you grant the eight powers and the nine
treasures; ram's eternal servant, you are the divine
holder of the elixir of his name; by singing praise
to you, ram can be found and from that precious place
sorrow of countless lives simply starts to fade away.
the day one's body dies is the day ram's play -
lila - comes into fruition and one enters his own city,
or returns to earth as a devotee, one so pretty.
one's delight in you is infinite; no other deity is needed;
all affliction is eradicated and simply defeated
by remembering the mighty hero, baba hanuman.
bestow your grace on us all as the guru of man.
