I like a hero movie as much as anyone, but don’t let it program your thinking.

You are the hero of your own story, not some political puppet. As someone who has been labeled a voluntaryist or anarchist (“without rulers”), I try to stay civil during times of political hoopla where people gush with emotion about their new savior who is going to somehow make everything in their life better. But sometimes I have it just say...

No.

Stop it.

You make your life better, not some constructed personality making empty promises they have no intention or ability to keep. You do it when you treat your kids with love and patience and transparently share your true underlying feelings (fear, love, worry) instead of yelling or getting defensive. You do it when you stop avoiding dealing with the unhealthy attachments and expectations in your relationships. You do it when you find work that matters and gives your life a sense of meaning and purpose you are proud of. You do it when you expand your awareness of what is and evolve your consciousness.

Other than new threats of violence written down (“laws” or the current primitive standard for how we come to consensus), how has politics or politicians directly improved your life? If you have an example, is it one where they gave you back a freedom you already inherently had or did they do something for you using value they stole through extortion from someone else? Think clearly about this, and it won’t seem so great anymore.

Things start getting better when we decide to make them better in our own lives. The more energy and validity we give to authorities and rulers, the less personal responsibility is required to build better systems and create new realities ourselves. Please, stop playing this game of make believe. The hero you’re looking for is yourself.
