Eating ferns in Sarawak, Malaysia

13 pictures that describe my day at the fresh market. This is one of the many markets in the city.

## The MIDIN

A type of fern that is grown around Miri near drainage canals and peat swamps usually harvested by hand. This plant can't be grown by man. Stir fried usually with garlic. Crunchy. Chewy. I guess, it helps move unwanted stuff out of our intestines.

## Where to find the Midin

I think this fern is only found in Sarawak. Available in all fresh markets.

Many sellers come here early. Before dawn. The close their stalls at around 2pm in the afternoon. These are the early birds of the city. I usually wake up at around 7 or 8.

Usually in the afternoon before the market closes, the sellers do their own part by cleaning up. Many of the folks selling here are retired. The best things about going to these markets is to first of all support the local sellers and also to make new friends.

My wife and I usually go to these markets to hunt for plants. Usually those that have purplish leaves. Those special plants. Greening the environment.

The Midin

Greens - good for the body and the best thing of all, it doesn't harm any animals. guilt free food. I do eat meat but I try to minimize my meat consumption to have a bit of sympathy for animals being slaughtered.

## A really unique stall

This was how most stalls were in the past before modernization. Gradually, these stalls would one day disappear. This stall sells candies, some household items, drinks. These can be found in the huge supermarkets nowadays. Youths nowadays prefer those air conditioned malls and huge modern supermarkets.

## Fresh fish anyone?

Fresh catch rivers nearby and the South China Sea. I don't usually buy fish due to the amount of bones to remove when I eat them. My dad used to buy tons of fish when I was younger.

With her face shield as well as mask on, I could see her expression while I snapped this photo. She wondered why I wanted to take a picture of her. Eggs, potatoes, garlics, coconut milk, salted egg, century eggs are some of what she sells.

## Thirst

My wife and I walked to the section of the market where they sold cooked food and drinks.

The lady in her fifties asked me what drink I wanted to have. I ordered "The special Tea Milk" / TEH C SPECIAL. C in Malaysia stands for milk. If you want coffee with milk. Coffee C. Vintage stall. I love the way these stalls look. The place many of the older generations went to to have a chat with their friends. Many of these folks have gone.

I love the way the market is set up, very organized, and the sellers have a place to sit. In my recent video upload I mentioned the variety of fruit and vegetables available within arm's reach of any Cambodian granny selling at the market. There is a lot of variety in Cambodian markets, but it's also chaos, like scenes from Mad Max or something, but very exciting.

Seeing the coffee vendor and the two chairs and table reminds me of the importance of microbusiness in the world, and the importance of supporting the people who run them. They are the salt of the earth.
