Rules were meant to be broken. We've unanimously stuck to that story for ages and the mischievousness in each of us has felt the guilt of breaking rules. I've learned it's simpler to just ignore inconvenient rules and regulations, especially if they get in the way of a good time. 

Does that make me an outlaw or someone who questions authority? Yes, it does. 

The very notion of breaking rules is too confrontational,  too challenging to the authorities that imposed those rules in the first place. Defiantly breaking rules almost invites the authors of those rules to take action to subdue the culprits.

Ignoring the rules, on the other hand, relegates the importance of those rules to their proper place in the grand scheme of things. Out of sight, out of mind. Ignorance of the law may not be an excuse for some, but for others it is bliss.

Ignoring the rules, one is blind to not only the rules themselves, but we are also free of the responsibility of having to comply with obeying them. Unless someone takes it upon themselves to enforce the rules, no compliance is necessary. The burden of compliance shifts to the enforcer.

Some rules are necessary and needed. We shouldn't kill, steal, or hurt people, for example, we should dispose of nuclear waste according to the rules while driving we should stop at red lights, but many rules in our modern society are completely useless and ridiculous. There are so many rules today that it's impossible to get through the day without breaking at least one. Soon, there will be so many rules we'll all be outlaws by default.

The bulk of our laws are not really laws at all, they are statutes. regulations, and ordinances and are only really enforceable if a person complies, which we have been trained from childhood to do. Rules are merely precedents and guidelines, if you will, not any real authority unless you agree to comply.

When I was in the Army we obeyed the laws of the UCMJ or Uniformed Code Of Military Justice. As the name implies, the rules were clearly defined in the UCMJ rule book and the actions and punishments for disobeying the rules were spelled out in clear language and administered the same for everyone in all branches of the military. No exceptions.

Except for one thing. Reprimands and punishments were never administered uniformly at all, ever. You see, humans made all those rules, humans interpreted and filtered the information surrounding disobeying those rules, and humans administered the actions against those caught breaking the rules. 

One thing about humans that remains constant is, we're anything but uniform, even in the military. Humans can be influenced and our responses can vary based on innumerable variations at any given time.  

Seeing how rules can and are applied, addressed and enforced in varying degrees in different situations left me with an understanding that rules are not written in stone and are more flexible than we realize. 

Knowing this has led to some interesting Jedi mind tricks when dealing with authorities that have steered them away from harassing me with their compulsive rule enforcing fetish. These are not the droids you're looking for officers. Move along.

I have found it much easier to casually ignore inconvenient rules than to flood them in the spotlight of a challenge and the results are often that rules not to my liking seem to mysteriously evaporate from my concerns. No enforcer appears to force my compliance and no further mention of them ever materializes.

Giving it no energy leaves it with nothing to feed on and it vanishes from my world. Try it yourself and see. 

In time I have developed my own rules that are applied only to me and enforced only by me and so, I can break my own rules whenever I want to. 

In short, my rule on rules is obey the ones you like and ignore the one you don't like and your life will get much simpler.
