Hallo liebe Community,
nachdem wir also unsere Wildlife Tour durch die Sümpfe der Everglades erfolgreich beendet hatten, führte unser Weg weiter Richtung Süden. Da wir das Mittagessen bisher ausgelassen hatten, beschlossen wir unterwegs noch etwas nahrung zuzuführen. Wir steuerten einen Raising Cane's an. Das Konzept von Raising Cane's basiert auf einem sehr begrenzten Menü, das sich ausschließlich auf Hähnchenstreifen konzentriert. Ihr Slogan "ONE LOVE" spiegelt diese Spezialisierung auf "Craveable Chicken Finger meals" wider. Sie wollen Chicken Fingers einfach besser zubereiten als jeder andere. Und ich muss sagen, das ist ihnen gelungen. Der Laden ist gerade bei jugendlichen aktuell so dermaßen in, dass unser Sohn unbedingt hin musste. Natürlich durfte auch der "Eimer" Spezialsoße nicht fehlen, auch wenn wir nicht mal die Hälfte davon geschafft haben. Aber es war alles extrem lecker.

Gut gesättigt fuhren wir weiter und kamen auch recht bald an die Südspitze Floridas wo wir nach kurzer Zeit das Festland verließen und sozusagen Inselhopping betrieben. Nun waren wir auf den Keys. Die Florida Keys sind eine einzigartige und faszinierende Inselkette im südlichsten Teil Floridas, die sich wie eine Perlenkette etwa 120 Meilen (ca. 190 km) von der Südspitze des Festlandes in den Golf von Mexiko und den Atlantischen Ozean erstreckt. Sie sind die sichtbaren Teile eines alten Korallenriffs. Sie bestehen aus über 200 Inseln, von denen aber nur etwa 40 bewohnt oder für den Tourismus zugänglich sind. Der Name "Keys" leitet sich vom spanischen Wort "Cayo" ab, was "kleine flache Insel" oder "Sandbank auf einem Korallenriff" bedeutet. Die Inseln sind durch den berühmten Overseas Highway (U.S. Highway 1) miteinander verbunden. Diese Straße, die sich über 42 Brücken erstreckt (darunter die beeindruckende Seven Mile Bridge), gilt als eine der schönsten Straßenfahrten der Welt und wurde ursprünglich auf den Pfeilern einer alten Eisenbahnlinie gebaut.

Und genau über diese Brücken fuhren wir von Insel zu Insel. Ein atemberaubender Anblick folgte auf den nächsten. Ungefähr in der Mitte der Keys hatten wir endlich gegen Abend unser Ziel für die nächsten 3 Tage erreicht. Die Ortschaft Marathon mit unserem Hotel, dem Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites. Wir bezogen direkt unser Zimmer und freuten uns über den Ausblick aufs Meer aus unseren Fenstern. Ein kleiner Rundgang durchs Hotel zeigte uns schnell, dass wir gut ausgesucht hatten. Alles sehr sauber, sehr schöner Poolbereich mit Hängematten und fantastischem Ausblick, ein gutes Restaurant direkt neben dem Hotel, sowie ein kleiner Hafen für Fischer- und Ausflugsboote rundeten unsere Unterkunft ab. Hier genossen wir dann auch den Sonnenuntergang und fielen umgehend todmüde ins Bett. Kein Wunder, nach solch einem spannenden aber auch anstrengenden Tag. 

Die Erkundung der näheren Umgebung musste bis zum nächsten Tag warten. Aber mehr davon in meinem nächsten Post.

Hello dear community,
After successfully completing our wildlife tour through the swamps of the Everglades, our journey continued south. Since we had skipped lunch so far, we decided to get some food along the way. We headed to a Raising Cane's. The Raising Cane's concept is based on a very limited menu that focuses exclusively on chicken strips. Their slogan "ONE LOVE" reflects this specialization in "craveable chicken finger meals." They simply want to make chicken fingers better than anyone else. And I have to say, they succeeded. The shop is currently so popular with young people that our son absolutely had to go. Of course, the "bucket" of special sauce was a must, even though we didn't even finish half of it. But it was all extremely delicious.

Well-fed, we continued on and soon reached the southern tip of Florida, where we left the mainland after a short while and went island-hopping, so to speak. Now we were in the Keys. The Florida Keys are a unique and fascinating chain of islands in the southernmost part of Florida, stretching like a string of pearls about 120 miles (approximately 190 km) from the southern tip of the mainland into the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. They are the visible remains of an ancient coral reef. They consist of over 200 islands, of which only about 40 are inhabited or accessible to tourism. The name "Keys" is derived from the Spanish word "cayo," meaning "small flat island" or "sandbar on a coral reef." The islands are connected by the famous Overseas Highway (U.S. Highway 1). This road, which spans 42 bridges (including the impressive Seven Mile Bridge), is considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the world and was originally built on the pillars of an old railroad.

And it was precisely over these bridges that we drove from island to island. One breathtaking view followed the next. Approximately in the middle of the Keys, we finally reached our destination for the next three days around evening: the town of Marathon, where we had our hotel, the Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites. We checked into our room straight away and were delighted by the ocean view from our windows. A quick tour of the hotel quickly showed us that we had made a good choice. Everything was very clean, a very nice pool area with hammocks and a fantastic view, a good restaurant right next to the hotel, and a small harbor for fishing and excursion boats rounded out our accommodations. Here we enjoyed the sunset and immediately fell into bed, dead tired. No wonder, after such an exciting but also exhausting day.

Exploring the surrounding area had to wait until the next day. But more about that in my next post.
