Being Humble Enough to Teach

For the past couple of months now I have been teaching a group of guys how to trade the markets.

I laughed when I saw the meme above because it is an accurate picture of what my initial teaching session looked like. You can imagine the looks I received after drawing on the board.

Once I realized my audience was looking at me like I had 3 heads, it was time to simplify the terms.

### <center>Teaching to Be Surpassed</center> ###

For a time, I enjoyed feeling like I was the smartest person in the room and kept things vague enough that comprehension was slow.

I received a kick in the pants the more I read from John Maxwell about training those around you to carry on what you believe.

John often talks in his books about how companies rise and fall on the leadership they have.

We are seeing an example of this in our current day with a company like Apple. They are slowly losing their status as an innovation leader as their sales deteriorate. Steve Jobs was not a great teacher when it came to passing on what Apple’s core thesis is (pun intended).

So often we exchange our hours for dollars but never receive what our real worth is as an individual. Learning to trade opens up a 24/5 cycle where you can earn based on your terms.

I forgot that for a time and was only interested on being the best in my social circle and known as the numbers guy.

Thankfully, I have a gracious Lord who ordains mentors to speak to me and close friends who push me to be better.

Now we are working to challenge each other but not in a macho sense. Our competition is ourselves and becoming 1% better every day at our craft. To God be the glory.

When I write, I write for art's sake alone - I don't compete and I learned you can't write to pay a bill. Do what you love and success will follow. Don't kick against the goad. Thanks for the honesty!

Anyone can take something simple and turn it into a mess.

The rare great teacher makes complex and difficult matters simple for others to understand (or use).

I've met a lot of high-test-scoring people who believed that talking about their subject matter in a way that was purposely difficult to understand was a way of maintaining and demonstrating not just their superior level of knowledge but their superiority. They also love to pontificate. There are some paid instructors who dont truly want you to learn what they know.

For quants and numbers guys, this can be especially tricky!

Very well said about trading allowing you to earn on your terms. In a way, it does offer you more job security and you're always paid what you 'deserve'.

It can be tough initially if you're risking your own money vs your company's money. Speaking from experience lol.
