Inktober 2021, Day13 - Roof

<div class="text-justify">The word for day 13 of Inktober was - <em>roof</em>. I sense a bit of a theme forming as I go on with my drawings for this challenge. A returning, mysterious, grey-skinned alien character. A stranger and an explorer visiting even stranger worlds. Here have her wearing her stealthy, purple cape as she observes the even stranger city from the roof.

<br>There are days when the creative energy flows with ease. There are also hard days when you have to fight and slay a bunch of monsters before you reach the top and are victorious. Let me tell you! I fought a bunch of battles for this one. Blood, sweat, tears, and all! xD At one point, I almost gave up but luckily I was encouraged to stay a course. The perfectionist within me can also be the biggest saboteur. I am beyond glad I did not give up and kept going. <em>Happy little accidents...</em>

I used my trusted Faber-Castell 2b pencil to start the battle with the underlying sketch. Then went over the lines with a Pigma Brush pen everywhere except for the background. Looking back, I think this was where I made a different turn than usual, which later complicated things. I then inked the character. It is not very unusual for me. I always do it in this order despite being taught to start with the background instead. I used the combination of Diamine jet black and purple calligraphy/drawing ink on the cape/hoodie. 

The rooftops in the background were where I felt things getting difficult out of the blue. It wasn’t working for me until I whipped out the Pigma Brush pen once more and began going over everything there with heavy strokes. They muted the mess going on there enough for me to be happy with it. I then finished the drawing using the white Gelly Roll liner by adding stars in the Diamine Sherwood Green fountain pen ink sky and her attire.</div>

The Purple Observer sounds like a title of a short story or even a comic ahaha! If only I was a talented wordsmith xD I'm afraid that would have to wait another decade or someone else would have to write it.

@generikat told me to check out your work. I quite like the purple ink here, and the green from your other post with the limes. I wonder how well these inks would work in my old [Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph](https://www.kohinoorusa.com/rapidograph) technical pens from my drafting days?

Aww, that is very sweet of her! Kat is amazing! 

The purple ink is drawing ink and it has acrylic finish, it stays put after drying and I find it easy to apply layers on top of it with something like Pigma Micron liners. It is a bit different with the fountain pen inks from the same brand (Diamine) that have a more matte finish. The green one is more like that. Those technical pens look super fancy! I have never used them, so unfortunately it is difficult to say if they would be compatible. The description mentions that they can get clogged, I would be cautious not to ruin them. Especially, if they are expensive :)

Those pens definitely don't like binders in their ink supply. I have three nibs that are stuck from an incomplete cleaning after I finished Finals *cough* years ago. I am attempting water and alcohol solvent soaks, and I may buy an ultrasonic cleaner since I could probably use that for many other projects, too.

This is an interesting one. I know that she is on the roof observing other roofs but in a way she is also wearing a roof in the hood and cape. 
An interesting thing that I learned from a tattoo artist a long time ago is that certain tattoos (especially in the case of traditional ones and sailors tattoos) have very distinct meaning. The interesting one that comes to mind from seeing this image is the umbrella. An umbrella is a temporary shelter, a temporary roof and tattoos of umbrellas traditionally mean that a person had been homeless or had lived on the street for a time.
Your image reminded me of that story.

This one is so great! I think it is one of my favourites out of everything you've ever made. I know I say that often but, I can tell that you really stepped outside of your comfort zone here and I think it paid off really well. A lot of your drawings don't have backgrounds, or they have very simplistic ones, which is great and everything as that is your style, but this piece shows you can pull off a more standard background and I am just really enjoying it. 

My favourite parts are the dark, monotone rooftops against the colourful sky and the general mysterious, dreamlike quality of the whole piece. Also I feel like the pose and the shape of the legs looks really good. Magnificent work all around.

I need a good shake by the shoulders sometimes. Like, I have a drawer that is full of completed works that I later went in and re did because for some reason I decided that they were not perfect enough xD I later look at them and can't figure out what is wrong with me because they did not suck, but I told myself that and gave up on them xD Why it happens? I have no clue, but I can't see what other people see when I am working on stuff or even shortly after. They need to sit on a shelve for a week or longer and then I can see them for what they are not what I would do differently etc.

Yea, I can feel the ink lines on the paper when I move my fingers across the page. The more I look at it the more pleased with it I am. I guess it was just a shock wave in my perfectionism that did not allow me to be happy with it at first. I am weird that way. I struggle seeing what I create, because I see so much flaws and stuff. It is odd.

I don't think its odd. I think it's quite natural. I am the worst critic of my own work, even though I'm not a perfectionist 😅. There is always that feeling of more to be done. This one is a masterpiece. I wish I can run my hands through it too.
