Which One Should You Use ? Best Alternative To Microsoft Office Libre Office, Abiword or WPS

After installing linux, you must be wondering " what kind of word processor can I use? can I still use microsoft office?" unfortunately, you can not. When you first install linux, it often comes with Abiword. However, you may not like it because the reasons I am going to tell you about.

# Libre office

Libre office is a free and open source word processing which was forked from openoffice back in 2010. If you are a hardcore anti-proprietary software, this is one of an option for you. If you don't care about the interface design, this is definitely for you.

It may remind you of microsoft office 2003 interface. However, when it comes to functionality, it serves the purpose. If you need to install Microsoft Fonts, Check my post on how to do it.

# Abi Word

Abiword is an open source word processing based on C++. It has minimalist interface and its focus is its functionality.

However, if you are new and still not accustomed to this type of interface, another option for you maybe WPS, the closest & familiar interface for those who just recently migrate to use Linux.

# WPS

though it is proprietary, WPS can be seen as one of the best and solid replacement of microsoft office especially when you just started. It is a word processor available in mutli-platform and free for basic & personal use. This software is developed by Kingsoft, a company operating in three countries, USA, Hongkong, and China.

One of the best features compared to those two, is the ability to use eye protection. It will dim your work sheet that will make your writing more pleasant.

Personally, the best replacement for me is WPS. I have had trouble with Libre office because its incompatibility when I upload my files to google drive/when e-mailing something to my professor. So, instead of hurting myself in the long-term, I use WPS to save time and save me from headache and unnecessary trouble. Life is too short to purposely hurt yourself.

These three options are one of the best among options available. Again, when it comes to open source, you decide everything and how you want your environment to be. Are you looking for functionality or aesthetic or both? you are the captain of your system.

I have Libre Office and use it once in a while.  Particularly when I need to make or read a PDF directly from Microsoft.

The truth is I use Drive for 99% of my writing.  If I need photos I can download directly to drive. I love the way it synchs across all my devices and I'm really familiar with the filing system.  I've used it since you had to have an emulator to run it maybe about 2012?  Now there is a Linux version and it's wonderful.

Long, long time ago, before you were born, Microsoft had one product, MSDos.  Disc operating system.  There was no such thing as a mouse, everything was keystroke and commands.  My spreadsheet of choice was Lotus 123 and my go to writer was Egghead.  Microsoft bought both of those to base their office suite around.  Excell and Word will both still answer to the Lotus and Egghead commands.

For that matter, so will Libre :)

Must be a chore hahaha the first exposure I had was windows 98 cause my cousins used it. Then, when I got my first laptop, it came with windows XP and I was around 10 years old. Some of my uncles had this telephone cafe with tube computer as the billing system- the kind of computer that you smash when it's slow. 

I first spotted non microsoft software when I was around 15. I went to a neighbor house who used DELL and it showed something like open office. I was asking like " how do you get by using unconventional word processing?", she said " it works just fine" but I was baffled haha. Here I am, couple years later using alternative product.

@macchiata you should find an old 286 and try out Windows 3.1. 

There was an awkward period where you would be using Windows for one thing and then exit Windows to DOS to use a program that wasn't made for Windows.

You can use some editions of Microsoft Office if you know how to use Wine.

I use Libreoffice for Linux and Mac but I have used WPS and it wasn’t bad.
