Luke 10:35 (KJV)
*And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.*

I know that the focus of the account is on the Samaritan and who is a true neighbor. But I see an interesting piece of human character between the innkeeper and the Samaritan. Consider the trust they placed in each other:
**The Samaritan trusted that the two pence would be used on the victim**
He could have thrown him in the street as soon as the Samaritan left and kept the money.

**The innkeeper trusted that the Samaritan would come again**
Perhaps he was a frequent guest at this inn and well known. We do not know. We can be fairly certain that the innkeeper had no way to guarantee he would return.

**The innkeeper trusted that the Samaritan would cover extra expenses on his return**
Once the victim was removed the emotional necessity of caring for him would also be removed. Maybe the innkeeper would be generous himself and not ask it of the Samaritan. Perhaps the Samaritan's fortunes had turned and he did not have the money.

This entire transaction rests on the character of two men. If they were not good for their word the deed falls through.

Trust is built on character.
