![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYUXeWQmLKvapFyF9xLLEaZwmHKL3Vj2juPr5qgxZqGNA/image.png)

[Fuente](https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/cocodrilos-antiguo-egipto-temidos-y-venerados_12991/3)

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYNofiTHS3YZSEA1kF7oW8pfCrYfk2jCRzAZgxnmXBTaR/image.png)

[Fuente](https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/infancia-antiguo-egipto_15886)

![Orange and Pink Quote Photo Fashion Instagram Post.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXWNVnsFLGNBsWEe5E6WTPF9X2TyeJrddd4KwVrfj4urJ/Orange%20and%20Pink%20Quote%20Photo%20Fashion%20Instagram%20Post.jpg)

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmQ8mseZ1EYdMuTAEsE6XyHgsqQAMBuFpN2WChkf6ZeKvZ/image.png)

[Fuente](https://www.vivaelcole.com/blog/como-era-la-educacion-en-el-antiguo-egipto/)

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmfPzDC4en1spJbExUWNF7dJNEwkwkEBCMwu2q3MPdgfgA/image.png)

[Fuente](https://www.vivaelcole.com/blog/como-era-la-educacion-en-el-antiguo-egipto/)

(Image designed by me with the Canva editor.)

As those who know me already know, I love everything related to ancient Egypt, and in fact I have several articles with this topic, but this time I want to talk to you about how was the life of children at that time. Maybe you are not as passionate about this topic as I am, but I'm sure that at least it makes you very curious, so keep reading and maybe you will find interesting facts.

![Orange and Pink Quote Photo Fashion Instagram Post.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXWNVnsFLGNBsWEe5E6WTPF9X2TyeJrddd4KwVrfj4urJ/Orange%20and%20Pink%20Quote%20Photo%20Fashion%20Instagram%20Post.jpg)

(Image designed by me with the Canva editor.)

First of all, it's important to say that for the ancient Egyptians, children were considered a great blessing, because they were their offspring, that is, a way to perpetuate themselves in earthly life, and also a synonym of the future, however the infant mortality rate was too high and very few passed the first stage, which is why all mothers always carried their babies with them everywhere ,even when they were working, they carried the babies in cloth slings.

One of the reasons for the high rate of infant mortality was the fauna of Egypt itself, as it was quite common to find cobras and scorpions under the pots or even the beds, or even the little ones could die in the Nile River when encountering a crocodile or hippopotamus.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYUXeWQmLKvapFyF9xLLEaZwmHKL3Vj2juPr5qgxZqGNA/image.png)

[Fuente](https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/cocodrilos-antiguo-egipto-temidos-y-venerados_12991/3)

However, to try to keep children and pregnant women protected at all times, they had them wear amulets called "udjat" or "Eye of Horus" so that this deity would keep them guarded and safe.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYNofiTHS3YZSEA1kF7oW8pfCrYfk2jCRzAZgxnmXBTaR/image.png)

[Fuente](https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/infancia-antiguo-egipto_15886)

It was believed that these amulets protected people from illnesses, evil eye and even had the power to close wounds.

Another thing that Egyptian parents used to do was to take their babies to a professional astrologer to help them choose an appropriate name. (This is a custom that some Asian countries still maintain today). In the case of the Egyptians, names consisted of at least two parts: one denoting a quality and the other evoking a protector god. For example, the name Meret-Net (beloved of Net, the goddess of wisdom) according to their belief, would make the girl blessed with this gift.

![Orange and Pink Quote Photo Fashion Instagram Post.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXWNVnsFLGNBsWEe5E6WTPF9X2TyeJrddd4KwVrfj4urJ/Orange%20and%20Pink%20Quote%20Photo%20Fashion%20Instagram%20Post.jpg)

Well, now we must turn to the daily life of a child in ancient Egypt. They used to walk around barefoot and with their heads shaved, although children belonging to royalty used to wear a side braid until puberty, when they were cut it off.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmQ8mseZ1EYdMuTAEsE6XyHgsqQAMBuFpN2WChkf6ZeKvZ/image.png)

[Fuente](https://www.vivaelcole.com/blog/como-era-la-educacion-en-el-antiguo-egipto/)

Children grew up free, without any occupation until the age of four when they began their education, which depended on their sex and their position in society. For example, the children of rich families attended school where they had to learn everything related to religion, writing, science, astronomy and literature.

Egyptian girls, on the other hand, if they belonged to poor strata, had to learn to perform daily household chores, besides singing, dancing or playing an instrument, something that would help them to easily find a job in the pharaoh's palace.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmfPzDC4en1spJbExUWNF7dJNEwkwkEBCMwu2q3MPdgfgA/image.png)

[Fuente](https://www.vivaelcole.com/blog/como-era-la-educacion-en-el-antiguo-egipto/)

The little princes were educated in the palace with a private teacher, and the children of the scribes could also consider themselves fortunate because they could also learn to read and write. For this they had to learn by heart a syllabary (composed of hieroglyphics, of course). After learning them by heart, the children had to copy them without looking, and only if they succeeded could they be considered literate.

This is the syllabary along with its pronunciation.

[Fuente](https://www.vivaelcole.com/blog/como-era-la-educacion-en-el-antiguo-egipto/)

Toys

The toys of the ancient Egyptian children were quite similar to those of today's children, i.e., they also played with balls and dolls, but above all they liked animals made of wood, which were painted in bright colors, and there were even some with moving parts, such as a lion that opens and closes its mouth, which is currently, along with other pieces in the British Museum in London.

[Fuente](http://amigosdelantiguoegipto.com/?page_id=75)

There were also wooden horses and even dice made of bones.

[Fuente](http://amigosdelantiguoegipto.com/?page_id=75)

These dice arrived through trade during the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.

![Orange and Pink Quote Photo Fashion Instagram Post.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXWNVnsFLGNBsWEe5E6WTPF9X2TyeJrddd4KwVrfj4urJ/Orange%20and%20Pink%20Quote%20Photo%20Fashion%20Instagram%20Post.jpg)
