After a year or two in Japan and after learning the language beyond a rudimentary level, the reverse sentence structure ceased to be an issue. It even started to sound natural.

And over the years, I learned quite a few of the kanji pictograms – enough to get by very easily in daily life. But I could never wrap my head around the fact that <em>“Yes”</em> can sometimes mean <em>“No.”</em> Nor could I comprehend all those other vague, unclear, deceptive, and evasive expressions.<p>

The Japanese writing system consists of three different character sets Kanji (several thousands of Chinese characters) and Hiragana and Katakana (two syllabaries of 46 characters each; together called Kana). Japanese texts can be written in two ways: In Western style, i.e. in horizontal rows from the top to the bottom of the page, or in traditional Japanese style, i.e. in vertical columns from the right to the left side of the page. Both writing styles exist side by side today.

It is rather difficult, and it can be very confusing. Still, I learned to speak the language fairly well, and eventually, I even learned how to say "NO" by saying "YES."  

Don't ask ... cuz I cannot explain.

Have you ever heard of Rosetta Stone language learning software? It's apparently very effective. I've only tried it out a few times, but if I ever want to learn another language, I'd probably use it.

Actually, it's not that difficult. I studied it part-time for about 4 years total, and learned quite a bit. The grammar is quite simple, and the pronunciation is very easy. 

Of course, the characters are a bit daunting at first, but even they are not very difficult to learn. And once you start learning them and seeing the history and logic behind the characters, it becomes very interesting.
