What was your first computer experience?
![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/makerhacks/kjH0ZlAI-image.png)

This meme went around Facebook and generated a lot of conversation. I thought I would expand on my answer here and see what your story was :)

We played on a cousin's Atari 2600, and had one of those pong sports games, but we didn't get to experience a computer until I was 8 or 9.

My first experience of a home computer was the Commodore Vic 20 that my cousin brought around on a visit. That Christmas, 1983 I think, my parents bought our own Vic via the shopping catalogue. This meant a few years later when we upgraded, they were still paying off the vic. That said, it was a founding moment in my life and I will be forever grateful.

After the vic 20, a few years later we got a Spectrum 128+2 when they dropped in price after Amstrad bought Sinclair. This is due to not knowing anyone with a Commodore 64 apart from the same cousin who introduced us to the Vic 20, and he lived too far away to swap games with.

In the UK at that time, Sinclair was highly popular. There were essentially:

1. Spectrum 48k
2. Commodore 64
3. Amstrad 464
4. BBC/Electron
5. Oric, Dragon 32, etc

And we all used tapes. Nobody I knew had a disk drive until the Amiga and Atari ST other than some folks who did wordprocessing.

The only folks I knew who had a monitor were the Amstrad owners, or again wordprocessor users.

In 1987/1988 my brother saved from his first wages and bought an Atari 520STFM. The price had dropped during the marketing war with the Amiga 500. Again, nobody we knew had an Amiga. Well, we knew one person but he wouldn't have swapped games anyway. The ST was οΏ‘100 or more cheaper than the Amiga, and there was a huge software library.

I didn't realize until a few years ago that both the Commodore 64 and Amiga lived on long into the 1990s. While I own both now, by the early 90s I had switched to PC and I thought home computers had become obsolete.

My first PC was a 286 with 12mhz, 1mb RAM, and a 40mb hard disk. To get the big hard drive I had to sacrifice colour in the monitor, so only had monochrome until I got to upgrade later.

## Over to you, what was your first computing experience?

I am going to nominate/tag @themarkymark to answer :)

I've been using computers for 37 or 38 years. My first computer was a TI99/4A, that I bought for my 12th birthday.
It was the world's first 16 bit personal computer with a huge 16Kb RAM.
Before that I used friend's Vic20s and others.

I didn't know that, that's cool that it was the first 16 bit machine :)

When I think of 1980s 16 bit I always think of the PC and 68000 based machines!

As a teenager in the early 90's i had a Commodore 64. Used it mostly for games, loading most games from the cassette player. Bought accessories like discette drive, printer and an Action Replay Cartridge. Had it for some years until i sold the whole package which i regret today.
My first pc was a pentium 200Mhz, 32MB ram came with windows 95 installed and nothing else. I believe this was around 1996-97. Did not take long till i got online, on dialup connection as nothing else was available. And since then been stuck in cyberspace.

Going way back to 1979 my parents bought us an Atari 2600 for Christmas, back then it was just call Atari. lol We used that thing for many years and I think my brother may still have it.

My first computer was my dads hand me down from 1982, it was an Epson QX10. It had 2 256k floppy disks, a green screen and didn't come with dos, my dad added a dos board later. The computer worked on mbasic and there was no mouse so you had to use commands to do anything. Huge difference from today's computers. lol

If your brother has it then he is sitting on gold, don't let him throw it out!

The first XT PC I used had two floppy drives side by side, and ran DOS. Switching disks to do anything useful was such a pain, and we had to write protect the DOS and software disks to stop folks corrupting them :)

The first computer I owned was a RCA Cosmac 1802 development board with 256 bytes of RAM and the programs had to be entered in assembly code. I eventually bought a Teletype ASR 33 printing terminal with attached paper tape reader to load programs from. Probably from early 1980's.

This is an interesting question... My first experience was in my IT classes where we were working on Misedo 85 machines... :) After that, I remember playing some games at my friends on Commodore 64, and 128...
My first personal computer was PC286-machine, and after that all possible versions and combinations.... :)

Cheers!

Wow, I thought I was a computer geek but some of the very early brands you mention left me clueless. Never heard of them! LOL But once you hit the Commodore 64, then we were back in business ;)

I remember my first real interaction with a computer was my Dad's old IBM computer with the big floppy disk, etc. I don't recall the model as I was at an age I could care less & just wanted to USE the darn things for games (Wolfenstein!) & chatting on AOL lol. My dad was real thrilled with me when he received over a $300 phone bill from my AOL chat room use. (That is when they charged hourly rates! 🀣🀣)

Also, the ATARI 2600 was my favorite gaming system - Asteroids, Yars Revenge, Space Invader, PacMan, Ms. PacMan & more :) I really miss that system haha

Thanks for a very interesting blog post. I enjoyed reading this & it brought back some good memories for me. :)

Been watching the new documentary on Netflix and they had a whole bit about where Ms Pacman came from - very cool :)

The UK was its own little bubble, I think in North America Apple II was a much, much bigger deal, but we all agree on the C64 :D

Excellent discussion topic

My first computer experience was back in the 80's I was given an old XT computer,DOS - remember the flashing curser on black screen :) it had a massive 64 MB of Ram and 5.5 inch floppy disks, I was told at the time that there is no way I could break it, so I pushed the limits of hardware capacity and software development, I crashed the thing numerous times and rebuilt it quite a few, I learnt Database development on it and of all things early digital graphic design - Pre Photoshop

I have included this post in the Hive helping highlight for today to encourage further engagement

I also learned database development on DOS in my teens, even got a few pounds for helping a store create an inventory system, and created a health visitor logging database for our health promotion department. I used Dbase and DataEase :)

Incredibly DataEase still exists!!

Yes I used Dbase to create a community database for the LETS (Local Employment Trading system) back in the early 90's :) The database got used worldwide which was a bonus

worked on it with the founder of LETS from Canada and another developer from England, pre Internet really, all communication done via a Bulletin Board, took weeks to get a reply sometimes lol
