The word capital means different things to different people. To a man in the street, capital is simply money. But it should be realised that money is not wanted for its own sake, and if it cannot be used in production it certainly cannot be regarded as capital.

Let us illustrate this point with an example to make it clearer. Suppose producer has $1,000 in his savings account, to the extent in which this amount can be converted into concrete capital (say by using it to our have a machinery from someone.

Also within the country that amount can be be regarded as capital. But the society as a whole, unlike an individual, cannot easily dispose of the total money(in home currency) the society in this way, so that the society cannot regard such money as capital unless such money can be used to purchase capital goods from abroad.

To a business man, capital can refers to productive assets like business premises and fixtures, while an accountant regards capital as the excess of assets over liabilities. what do I mean by that? I mean the net worth of the business man.

Capital in strict economic sense many be defined as the existing stock of wealth used in the production of goods and services. In other words, it is the produced means of production, or wealth used for the production of further wealth. 

It therefore includes all producers goods such as factory buildings, tools and equipment machineries and raw materials but which excludes shares and securities (which are merely titled of the ownership of capital) as well as all consumers goods such as food stuffs, dresses and radios
