Es común que en tiempos difíciles y de calamidad, como los actuales, donde la humanidad entera se encuentra librando una dura batalla contra el mortal flagelo del **Covid-19**, los hombres y mujeres busquen en la oración las respuestas a sus problemas.

No es la primera vez que se registra un evento con estas características: la **peste negra** que se iniciara en Asia, llegaría posteriormente hasta el Mediterráneo y Europa occidental en 1348, matando a más de veinte millones de europeos en un período de seis años, una cuarta parte de la población total de aquel entonces.

Posteriormente  se registrarían diversas epidemias de cólera alrededor del mundo hasta que en 1918 llegara la **gripe española**, que a pesar de su nombre, se inicia en la localidad de Fort Riley, Kansas, Estados Unidos, desde donde se extendería por el globo terráqueo, cobrando alrededor de 25 millones de víctimas en el curso de seis meses; aún cuando algunos estudiosos estiman el total de muertos en todo el mundo en más del doble de ese número. En Venezuela el número de personas que perdieron la vida se situaría en una cifra cercana a las 80.000 víctimas.

En la actualidad y ante el avance del **Coronavirus**, la Organización Mundial de la Salud ha dictado medidas de prevención que incluyen, entre otras recomendaciones, el lavado frecuente de manos con jabón o gel antibacterial a base de alcohol, el uso de tapabocas o mascarillas y el aislamiento físico que se traduce en los confinamientos que los diversos gobiernos han decretado con la finalidad de cortar la cadena de propagación. 

Esta imagen que tomé a color unos años atrás, corresponde a la *Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá* es un templo católico ubicado en el casco histórico de la ciudad de Maracaibo, dedicado a la **Virgen de Chiquinquirá**, patrona del estado Zulia.

La fotografía original la modifiqué haciendo uso de la aplicación PicsArt, empleando una superposición de filtros, comenzando con un filtro del tipo HDR (High Dynamic Range) con la finalidad de ampliar los tonos de la imagen original, y posteriormente un filtro sencillo de Blanco & Negro para lograr el resultado deseado.</div>

It is common that in difficult and calamity times, such as today, where the whole of humanity finds itself fighting a hard battle against the deadly scourge of **Covid-19**, men and women look in prayer for answers to theirs problems.

It is not the first time that an event with these characteristics has been recorded: the **Black Plague** that began in Asia, would later reach the Mediterranean and Western Europe in 1348, killing more than twenty million Europeans in a period of six years, a quarter of the total population of that time.

Subsequently, various cholera epidemics would be recorded around the world until the **Spanish flu** arrived in 1918, which, despite its name, begins in the town of Fort Riley, Kansas, United States, from where it would spread throughout the world. globe, claiming around 25 million victims in the course of six months; even though some scholars estimate the death toll worldwide at more than double that number. In Venezuela the number of people who lost their lives would be close to 80,000 victims.

Currently and due to the advancement of **Coronavirus**, the World Health Organization has issued preventive measures that include, among other recommendations, frequent washing of hands with soap or alcohol-based antibacterial gel, the use of masks covering mouth and nose, and social isolation that results in the lockdown that the various governments have decreed in order to cut the chain of spread.

This image that I took in color a few years ago, corresponds to the *Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá* is a Catholic temple located in the historic center of the city of Maracaibo, s building dedicated to the **Virgin of Chiquinquirá**, patron of the Zulia state.

I modified the original photograph using the **PicsArt** application, using a filter overlay, starting with a filter of the HDR (High Dynamic Range) type in order to enlarge the tones of the original image, and later a simple filter of White & Black to achieve the desired result.</div>
