Since ancient times, some civilizations have venerated or appreciated snakes, while in others they are repudiated. In Western civilization, mainly in the Judeo-Christian culture, the snake represents the Devil and everything related to evil; on the contrary, in the Far East it is considered a sacred animal that symbolizes strength and wisdom. A few weeks ago while I was visiting the Flor de Venezuela Cultural Center, I met this young man, an employee of this institution and evidently familiar with this animal species, holding in his hands a pair of non-poisonous snakes for those who wished to approach them, or even touch or photograph them.
