Before, I wrote as if the end of the world was scheduled for tomorrow.

Literally!

My words were  An out-of-control forest fire, and I, the poor, poor soul volunteering as fuel.

I slept little, ate worse (my diet consisted of coffee, cookies, and feverish dreams of literary glories), and I ignored the headache that pounded at my temples like a rural Flintstone.

I firmly believed that literature demanded that kind of sacrifice, that to be faithful to the stories I had to betray my body, my body.

How naive I was!

And now, oh, the body!

The body is an old traitor that one day takes its toll. Suddenly, my back demands too much, my vision sometimes blurs as if I lived in a permanent fog, and my hands, those hands that once flew over the keyboard with the agility of a hummingbird, now hesitate, growing tired just thinking about a long paragraph.

The doctor, with that poker face that only they master, laid the studies on the table. It was  As if imposing a life sentence: "If you continue like this," he said gravely, "in five years you won't be able to hold a pencil."

A pencil! The most basic tool of my trade! I almost fainted.

But, surprise! I keep writing. The demon of writing hasn't abandoned me. I won't let it go.

Only now, I've changed the method—"The Recourse of Method," Alejo Carpentier would say—and I've done so radically. I write with the blinds wide open, inviting the three o'clock sun to join the party.

I stop. Yes, I really stop when my fingers start to feel like cold churros. I walk to the kitchen, make some coffee. Something I would have previously disdained as a vile waste of time, an unacceptable distraction in my literary crusade.

Now, I sit by the window, looking at the same old tree, that old acquaintance, but… now I see it! 

Oh, tree! Oh, immense forest!

I see the leaves emerging, the nest that the branches jealously hide. I see the sunlight filtering through them like liquid gold. And it's beautiful.

But writing is no longer a frantic race against death, against time running out. Now it's more of a diary of survival, a record of moments, of sensations.

Ideas still come like wild lightning bolts, those epiphanies that shake your soul. But I no longer burn myself trying to catch them all like butterflies.

I jot down the essentials without the paralyzing panic of yesteryear. If an idea slips away, if one fades, I think others will come. And they come from time to time. The fear of not saying everything in time has mysteriously transformed into the certainty that what's important endures; everything else, the rest, was just background noise.

My characters continue to speak to me. They tell me their secrets, their dramas, even in the shower.  And those sleepless nights, which I used to spend straining my eyes with letters that danced like drunken elves, I now fill with audiobooks. I discovered that silence also writes, that it has its own melody, as long as you know how to listen.

Time is still there, relentless, an old bloodhound that never tires. But I no longer struggle with it, I no longer fight tooth and nail.

We have negotiated truces.

Now I write two hours less a day; my output has dropped a little. But I do it with steadier hands, with a clearer mind.

I let the stories breathe between paragraphs, let them take their time.  And I've discovered something wonderful: they take on a life of their own, they expand, they breathe, when I don't suffocate them with my haste.

There's a strange peace, a strange calm in this new rhythm. It's like knowing that the sea will still be there tomorrow, immense, with its mysterious waves and unfathomable secrets, even if I don't bathe in its waters today.

The words are no longer my masters, they are not tyrants demanding sacrifices. Now they are traveling companions, accomplices.

And when I close my eyes at nightfall, I feel my mother, that tireless light, smiling at this luminous change within me. She knows the fire of my words, the love in every line, and she celebrates that the stories I write and life are intertwined like the roots of the same tree.

Oh, tree! Oh, immense forest!

Antes, yo escribía como si el fin del mundo estuviera programado para mañana. 

¡Literalmente! 

Mis palabras eran un incendio forestal descontrolado y yo, la pobre pobre alma que se ofrecía voluntaria como combustible. 

Dormía poco, comía peor (mi dieta consistía en café, galletas y sueños febriles de glorias literarias) y me pasaba por alto ese dolor de cabeza que martillaba mis sienes como un picapiedra rural. 

Creía firmemente que la literatura exigía ese tipo de sacrificio, que para serle fiel a las historias tenía que traicionar a mi cuerpo, mi cuerpo. 

¡Qué ingenuo fui!

Y ahora, ¡ay, el cuerpo! 

El cuerpo, es un viejo traidor que un día  pasa factura. De repente, mi espalda reclama demasiado, mi visión a veces se nubla como si viviera en una permanente niebla, y mis manos, esas manos que antes volaban sobre el teclado con la agilidad de un colibrí, ahora dudan, se cansan con solo pensar en un párrafo largo. 

El médico, con esa cara de póker que solo ellos dominan, puso los estudios sobre la mesa. Era como si pusiera una sentencia de cadena perpetua: "Si sigue así," dijo con gravedad, "dentro de cinco años no podrá sostener un lápiz." 

¡Un lápiz! ¡La herramienta más básica de mi oficio! Casi me da un síncope.

Pero, ¡sorpresa!, sigo escribiendo. El demonio de la escritura no me ha abandonado. No lo dejo ir.

Solo que ahora, cambié el método, El recurso del método, diría Alejo Carpentier, y lo hice radicalmente. Escribo  con las persianas abiertas de par en par, invitando al sol de las tres de la tarde a que se una a la fiesta. 

Me detengo. Sí, me detengo de verdad cuando mis dedos empiezan a sentirse como churros fríos. Camino hasta la cocina, preparo un café. Algo que antes habría desdeñado como una vil pérdida de tiempo, una distracción inadmisible en mi cruzada literaria. 

Ahora, me siento en la ventana, miro el mismo árbol de siempre, ese viejo conocido, pero… ¡ahora lo veo! 

¡Oh, árbol! ¡Oh, inmenso bosque!


Veo las hojas, que nacen, el nido que las ramas esconden con celo. Veo la luz del sol filtrándose entre ellas como si fuera oro líquido. Y es hermoso.

Pero la escritura ya no es una carrera frenética contra la muerte, contra el tiempo que se agota. Ahora es más bien un diario de supervivencia, un registro de momentos, de sensaciones. 

Todavía llegan las ideas como relámpagos salvajes, esas epifanías que te sacuden el alma. Pero ya no me quemo intentando atraparlas todas como si fueran mariposas. 

Anoto lo esencial sin ese pánico paralizante de antaño. Si se escapa alguna idea, si alguna se desvane, pienso que vendrán otras. Y vienen de vez en cuando.  El miedo a no decir todo a tiempo se ha transformado, ¡misteriosamente!, en la certeza de que lo importante perdura, lo demás, el resto, era solo ruido de fondo.

Mis personajes, siguen hablándome. Me cuentan sus secretos, sus dramas, incluso en la ducha. 

Y esas noches de insomnio, que antes dedicaba a forzar la vista con letras que bailaban como duendes borrachos, ahora las lleno con audiolibros. Descubrí que el silencio también escribe, que tiene su propia melodía, siempre y cuando uno sepa escuchar. 

El tiempo sigue ahí, implacable,  viejo sabueso que no se cansa. Pero ya no forcejeo con él, no lucho a brazo partido. 

Hemos negociado treguas.

Ahora escribo dos horas menos al día, mi producción ha bajado un poquito. Pero lo hago con las manos más firmes, con la mente más clara.

Dejo que las historias respiren entre párrafo y párrafo, que se tomen su tiempo. Y he descubierto algo maravilloso: ganan vida propia, se expanden, respiran, cuando no las asfixio con mi prisa.

Hay una paz rara, una calma extraña en este ritmo nuevo. Es como saber que el mar seguirá ahí mañana, inmenso, con sus olas misteriosas y sus secretos insondables, aunque hoy no me bañe en sus aguas. 

Las palabras ya no son mis dueñas, no son tiranos que me exigen sacrificios. Ahora son compañeras de viaje, cómplices.

Y cuando cierro los ojos al caer la noche, siento que mi madre, esa luz infatigable, sonríe ante este cambio, luminoso, que hay en mí. Ella conoce el fuego de mis palabras, el amor en cada línea, y  celebra que, las historias que escribo y la vida se entrelacen como raíces de un mismo árbol. 

¡Oh, árbol! ¡Oh, inmenso bosque!
