Today, an old woman showed up at my house. One of those who show their years not only in their wrinkles, but also in their way of walking, as if each step cost a little more than the last. She stopped in front of my door, took a deep breath, and said, almost to herself: *"If money disappeared, I would be happy."* She said it with that worn voice of someone who no longer expects anything, but continues speaking out of habit.

It wasn't a complaint. Not a lament. It was a fact, simple and sad, like saying the sun burns or that winter hurts your bones.  He looked at me with those clear eyes, half-veiled by tiredness, and I understood he wasn't just talking for the sake of it. He was speaking from a place where money had hurt.

I offered him water. A coffee. He only accepted the water, the glass trembling slightly in his fingers. Before leaving, he repeated the same phrase, as if it were the only truth he had left. And then he left, dragging his feet, and his words stuck in my head, like a thorn.

Money is strange. If you think about it, it's just a piece of paper, a number on a screen, a promise. But we believed it. All of us. At some point in history, someone said "this is worth it," and the rest nodded without asking much. Before, perhaps, things were clearer: a sack of grain for a pair of shoes, a sheep for a tool. But then coins, bills, banks arrived, and suddenly the value of things was no longer in what they were, but in what they represented.

 And that's where the mess began.

Money isn't bad in itself. It's useful, of course. But we forgot it was only a means, and we turned it into the end. We work to earn it, we go into debt to get it, we kill ourselves trying to save it. And the worst part is, the more we have of it, the more we lack. It's like drinking salt water: it's never enough.

The old woman knows this. Not because she's read it somewhere, but because she's experienced it. There was no economic theory in her words, only the weight of having seen how money divides, corrodes, how it turns people into what they are not. Good people who become mean. Honest people who bend out of necessity. Families who break up over inheritances. Neighbors who stop talking to each other because of debt.

>I'm not saying that living without money is the solution. In the end, it's what allows us to eat, have a roof over our heads, move around. But I am saying that we've let it take up too much space. Let it creep in where it shouldn't.

 There are things that shouldn't have a price: a sunset, a sincere conversation, the time you steal from the day to watch it rain. The old woman understands. That's why she didn't want the coffee. Just the water. Because at that moment, all she needed was something real, something that had nothing to do with bills or prices.

I kept thinking about that long after she left. About how we've let a human invention define us. About how we give so much power to something that, in the end, doesn't even exist.

She's right. Not that money should disappear, but that we should remember that it's only a tool, not a measure of our worth. That there are happinesses that can't be bought. That there are poor people with full souls and rich people with empty hearts.

And that, in the end, the only thing we wear when we're gone is what we experience, not what we accumulate.

Hoy se apareció una anciana por mi casa. De esas que llevan los años no solo en las arrugas, sino en la manera de caminar, como si cada paso costara un poco más que el anterior. Se detuvo frente a mi puerta, respiró hondo y soltó, casi para sí misma: *"Si el dinero desapareciera, sería feliz"*. Lo dijo con esa voz gastada de quien ya no espera nada, pero sigue hablando por costumbre.  

No era una queja. Ni un lamento. Era un hecho, simple y triste, como decir que el sol quema o que el invierno duele en los huesos. Me miró con esos ojos claros, medio velados por el cansancio, y  entendí que no hablaba por hablar. Hablaba desde algún lugar donde el dinero había hecho daño.  

Le ofrecí agua. Un café. Solo aceptó el agua, y el vaso temblaba un poco entre sus dedos. Antes de irse, repitió la misma frase, como si fuera la única verdad que le quedaba. Y luego se marchó, arrastrando sus pies y sus palabras se me quedaron pegadas, como una espina.  



El dinero es raro. Si lo piensas bien, es solo un pedazo de papel, un número en una pantalla, una promesa. Pero nos lo creímos. Todos. En algún momento de la historia, alguien dijo *"esto vale"* y el resto asintió sin preguntar mucho. Antes, quizás, las cosas eran más claras: un saco de granos por un par de zapatos, una oveja por una herramienta. Pero luego llegaron las monedas, los billetes, los bancos, y de pronto el valor de las cosas ya no estaba en lo que eran, sino en lo que representaban.  

Y ahí empezó el enredo.  

El dinero no es malo en sí. Es útil, claro. Pero se nos olvidó que era solo un medio, y lo convertimos en el fin. Trabajamos para ganarlo, nos endeudamos por conseguirlo, nos matamos por guardarlo. Y lo peor es que, entre más lo tenemos, más nos falta. Es como beber agua salada: nunca es suficiente.  

La anciana lo sabe. No porque lo haya leído en algún lado, sino porque lo había vivido. En sus palabras no había teoría económica, solo el peso de haber visto cómo el dinero divide,  corroe, cómo convierte a la gente en lo que no es. Gente buena que se vuelve mezquina. Gente honesta que se dobla por necesidad. Familias que se rompen por herencias. Vecinos que dejan de hablarse por deudas.  

 

>No digo que vivir sin dinero sea la solución. Al final, es lo que nos permite comer, tener un techo, movernos. Pero sí digo que hemos dejado que ocupe demasiado espacio. Que se meta donde no debería.  

Hay cosas que no deberían tener precio: un atardecer, una conversación sincera, el tiempo que le robas al día para quedarte viendo cómo llueve. La anciana lo entiende. Por eso no quiso el café. Solo el agua. Porque en ese momento, lo único que necesitaba era algo real, algo que no tuviera que ver con cuentas ni precios.  

Yo me quedé pensando en eso mucho después de que se fuera. En cómo hemos dejado que una invención humana nos defina. En cómo le damos tanto poder a algo que, al final, ni siquiera existe.  

Ella tiene razón. No en que el dinero deba desaparecer, pero sí en que deberíamos recordar que es solo una herramienta, no una medida de nuestro valor. Que hay felicidades que no se compran. Que hay pobres con el alma llena y ricos con el corazón vacío.  

Y que, al final, lo único que llevamos puesto cuando nos vamos es lo que vivimos, no lo que acumulamos.
