Three Valuable Lessons You Should Learn When it Comes to Bitcoin Scams

The rise of the Bitcoin has been one filled with horror stories. For its greatness, the cryptocurrency to never be too far away from negative press. This time, it was thanks to a crypto trader being the latest victim of a scam. Alex Saunders is an Australian Bitcoin trader from Launceston. However, his experience did not save him from being a victim and losing AUD$ 1600 overnight. So, what hope does a new trader have when someone who is familiar with the Bitcoin universe falls victim of hackers? The answer is a lot of confidence. Three valuable lessons can be learned from this scam.

 1. Search for "the lock" in your browser

Safari, Opera, Chrome, Internet Explorer the all use a locking symbol next to the website address when you are using a certifiable encrypted connection. It may seem like a small thing, but double checking that simple detail can be the difference between spotting a phishing site and the real website. If you cannot see that lock or you doubt that the connection is secure, check the certificate. Double checking the certificate's validity was the difference for Mr Saunders. As he explained to ABC Australia, "I was in a rush, I wanted to make a trade, I saw an opportunity, and I wanted to do it quickly before I went to sleep." So, next time you open your Bitcoin trading website look for the certificate. It might save you some cash.

2. Bookmark your trading sites

Let's say you are an active Bitcoin trader in Kraken. You are familiar with the interface, and you have zero problems using it. However, instead of having it bookmarked or pinned to your preferred sites, you google it every time. That's the easiest way you get tricked into to phishing site. Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines have algorithms that can be convinced to put phishing sites as the top result under the right circumstances. Again, it may seem like a silly thing. But that detail was the beginning of the end for the Australian trader. "I just typed [my trading website] into Google and clicked on the link at the top," he explained to ABC Australia. Scammers can modify search results, but they cannot change the address you bookmarked.

3. Do your due diligence

The last lesson is the most important one. Before you check for certificates or bookmark things, you must look for information about the website you want to use. Online Bitcoin scammers are getting better at faking opinions and reviews. So do not just click on the first couple of review sites you find to determine if a website is trustworthy or not. Instead, check Bitcoin forums and ask questions. You will find that the Bitcoin community is quite proactive in sharing information about possible phishing and scamming sites. Bitcoin is a fascinating currency. Its decentralized nature has changed the way the market works. However, its rapid increase in value has attracted unwanted individuals looking to make quick money by stealing from others. So if you're a new trader, research, research, research. And if you're an experienced one, then keep an eye on the certificate and bookmark your Bitcoin trading page. Those simple things can keep you safe.
