Mythical Creatures by Yuko Shimizu (清水 裕子) / part 1
Shimizu’s work melds traditional Japanese graphics with surrealism 
and comic culture. The New York-based artist and illustrator 
draws her basic forms and figures with Japanese calligraphy brushes 
and later digitally supplements them with additional colors and backgrounds. 
This technique gives her elegant and harmoniously composed images the 
look of graphic prints. Her science-fiction fantasies and personal creative visions, 
which are often erotically charged, combine the best of American pop 
and Japanese comic culture.

In creating a new design, Shimizu reads the attached article, 
sometimes as many as twenty pages, or in some instances a mere 
sentence from which she must extract an idea. First comes research before 
making several free sketches with pen and pencil to help solidify ideas. 
Having settled upon a basic design, she makes a drawing in the actual 
size stipulated by the client. She traces the drawing on a light box using pencil and ink,
 with brush and India ink for any Japanese calligraphy. After the drawing is complete, 
she scans it and adds color using Photoshop.

Wow!  I had never heard of this artist before.  Thank you for sharing her work.  I am fascinated with her images of Asian women.  Sort of reminds me of Normal Rockwell, in that she melds high art with commercially illustrations.
