Bienvenidos a un nuevo capítulo de "El viajero Mariano" en donde visitaremos una Iglesia muy particular, se trata de Santo Antonio, es la más antigua de toda la ciudad. Se encuentra en la Plaza del Patriarca, en el centro de la ciudad.

La primera vez que visité  esta Iglesia fue   paseando por los alrededores, específicamente por la zona de San Bento, donde se encuentra mucha actividad de comercio y mucha movimiento de personas. 

En este momento esta Iglesia está  en restauración ya que es muy antigua y necesita constante mantenimiento.

Al enterarme de su historia quedé muy impresionado pues basicamente esta Iglesia es tan antigua como la misma ciudad de Sao Paulo,a tal punto que se desconoce mucho de su pasado, fundada en las últimas décadas del siglo XVI, como lo atestiguan los primeros registros documentales de su existencia, que datan de 1592. 


En el siglo XVII, albergó la Orden de los franciscanos, y en el siglo XVIII estuvo subordinada a la Hermandad de Nuestra Señora del Rosario.


Ha sufrido varias reformas e intervenciones durante los últimos cuatro siglos, especialmente en su fachada, reabierta en un estilo ecléctico en 1919.


El interior de la Iglesia de Santo Antônio conserva importantes testimonios del arte producido en São Paulo en el período colonial.

 El altar mayor, hecho en 1780, es también un hermoso ejemplo del Arte  de tallado estilo barroco,  donde se puede ver los colores  rojo y dorado de forma predominante.

La iglesia ha sido incluida en la lista del gobierno del estado (Condephaat) desde 1970 como patrimonio debido a su importancia histórica, artística y arquitectónica.


Realmente fue toda una experiencia, conocer un lugar tan antiguo y con tanta historia.
