  This bird has very contrasting plumage. It consists of a blue belly, yellow cheeks and a dewlap. The head is brown with a white forehead. A black strip runs from the head through the red eyes to the belly. The wings are brown and the loin area is yellow with an olive green rump. The blue tail has characteristic sharp brakes. The beak is long, arched downwards. > Ptak ten ma bardzo kontrastowe upierzenie. Składa się ono z niebieskiego brzucha, żółtych policzków i podgardla. Głowa jest brązowa z białym czołem. Od głowy przez czerwone oczy do brzucha biegnie czarny pasek. Skrzydła są brązowe, a okolice lędźwi żółte z oliwkowozielonym kuprem. Niebieski ogon ma charakterystyczne zakończone na ostro sterówki. Dziób jest długi, łukowato wygięty do dołu.   ## Merops apiaster and climate change > Żołna a zmiany klimatu   Merops apiaster is a bird that until recently was very rare in our climate zone. Currently, it can be found more and more often in Central Europe. Due to the warming of the climate, but also changes caused by man, this bird can be found more and more often in the northern regions of Europe. > Merops apiaster to ptak, który do niedawna był bardzo rzadko spotykany w naszej strefie klimatycznej. Obecnie można ją spotkać już coraz częściej na terenie Europy Centralnej. Ze względu na ocieplenie klimatu, ale również zmiany spowodowane przez człowieka coraz częściej tego ptaka można spotkać w północnych regionach Europy.   Merops apiaster grows up to about 25 cm in body length, and the wingspan can be up to 50 cm. The body weight of the bird is small and does not exceed 60 grams. This is one of the most colorful birds found in Central Europe and Poland. It is estimated that there are about 210 pairs of these beautifully feathered birds in Poland. > Merops apiaster dorasta do około 25 cm długości ciała, a rozpiętość skrzydeł może wynieść nawet 50 cm. Masa ciała ptaka jest niewielka i nie przekracza 60 gramów. To jeden z bardziej kolorowych ptaków spotykanych w Europie Centralnej i w Polsce. Szacuje się, że na terenie Polski jest około 210 par tych przepięknie upierzonych ptaków.    ## Bird food - Bee-eater bird > Pokarm ptaka - ptak pszczołojad   Another name for this bird is the bee-eater. Of course, they don't just feed on bees, but they are great gourmets of Hymenoptera insects, including bees, wasps, bumblebees, and dragonflies. Bee-eaters have an interesting quality when eating. Before they start hunting an insect, and they do it perfectly in flight, first the captured victims must be finally put to death, so that when swallowing the insect, its sting accidentally does not damage the bird's mucosa. That is why you can often see a bird sitting on some branch with an insect in its beak and waiting a long time for it to stop kicking. > Inna nazwa tego ptaka to pszczołojad. Oczywiście nie żywi się tylko pszczołami ale są wielkimi smakoszami owadów błonkoskrzydłych, w tym pszczół, os, trzmieli, ważek. Żołny mają ciekawą cechę podczas jedzenia. Zanim bowiem zaczną upolowanego owada, a robią to doskonale w locie, najpierw schwytane ofiary muszą zostać ostatecznie uśmiercone, aby przypadkiem podczas połykania owada jego żądło nie uszkodziło błony śluzowej ptaka. Dlatego bardzo często widać, jak ptak siedzi na jakiejś gałęzi z owadem w dziobie, i długo czeka aż ten przestanie wierzgać.    ## Solar baths > Kąpiele słoneczne  Bee-eaters love to bask in the spring rays of the sun. They can often be found lying down on hot sand. They lie near the nest and catch the first April rays of the sun. > Żołny bardzo lubią wygrzewać się w wiosennych promieniach słońca. Często można spotkać je w pozycji leżącej na rozgrzanym piasku. Leżą w pobliżu gniazda i łapią pierwsze kwietniowe promienie słońca.  ## Wandering bird > Wędrówki ptaka   Bee-eagles are migratory birds and they return to Central Europe in the second half of April or at the beginning of May. They are rather thermophilic. Currently, they are increasingly appearing in new, previously unoccupied positions. The birds fly away in August. > Żołny to ptaki wędrowne i do Europy Centralnej wracają w drugiej połowie kwietnia lub na początku maja. Są raczej ciepłolubne. Obecnie coraz częściej zaczynają pojawiać się na nowych, wcześniej przez siebie niezajmowanych stanowiskach. Ptaki odlatują w sierpniu. ## An unusual bird's nest > Nietypowe gniazdo ptaka   The bee-eater builds, or basically digs, its nests in the walls of quarries or gravel pits, in earthen cliffs, in sand slopes with compacted sand and clay. He does it with his beak, and when the mink is large enough to enter it, it throws out unnecessary sand or gravel with its feet. > Żołna buduje, a w zasadzie wykopuje swoje gniazda w ścianach kamieniołomów czy żwirowisk, w ziemnych urwiskach, w piaskowych skarpach z ubitym piaskiem i gliną. Robi to przy pomocy dziobu, a gdy już norka jest na tyle duża aby do niej wejść, wyrzuca nogami niepotrzebny piasek czy żwir.   A burrow dug in this way can be up to 2 m deep and ends with a nest chamber. There is no padding there. Usually, these birds return to the same burrow every year, but it is not a rule, as the bird adapts very quickly to new conditions, and if it suits it, it will stay in a new place. > Tak wykopana nora może mieć nawet do 2 m głębokości, i kończy się komorą gniazdową. Nie ma tam żadnej wyściółki. Zazwyczaj ptaki te wracają co roku do tej samej nory, ale nie jest reguła, gdyż ptak bardzo szybko dostosowuje się do nowych warunków, i jeśli mu będą odpowiadały pozostanie w nowym miejscu.   At the beginning of June, the female usually lays 5-6 in the nest. The eggs are snow-white in color. The chicks appear after about 3 weeks and are raised by both parents. They leave the mink after about a month. > Na początku czerwca w gnieździe samica składa najczęściej 5-6. Jajka mają kolor śnieżnobiały. Pisklęta pojawiają się mniej więcej po 3 tygodniach i wychowywane są przez oboje rodziców. Opuszczają norki po około miesiącu.
