<center>  El mercurio es definido como un metal pesado que se encuentra presente de diferentes formas y este genera un gran impacto en la salud humana asi como tambien en el personal de salud que labora en hospitales incluso en laboratorios, es importante enseñar a la poblacion a reconocer los principales riesgos sobre la salud asi como tambien su correcta manipulacion y desecho.  El mercurio puede ser orgánico, inorgánico y elemental, este se puede encontrar en algunos alimentos especialmente del mar como los mariscos, en la atmosfera, en las industrias, claro esta que dependiendo de la cantidad, y otros factores como la edad de la persona y la forma en la que se tuvo contacto puede afectar diferentes sistemas del cuerpo sobre todo en el sistema nervioso.  Por otra parte el mercurio es una sustancia toxica que al ingresar al organismo puede causar daños severos, este es un problema de salud y los principales afectados son aquellos que mantienen la constante exposicion a estas sustancias, las principales vias de exposicion del mercurio es a traves de la respiratoria, cutanea e ingestion.  Esta sustancia puede ocasionar daños severos en mujeres gestantes ocasionando problemas en el desarrollo fetal principalmente a nivel neurologico donde puede afectar sus capacidades cognitivas, motoras ademas de esto daños a nivel del sistema cardiovascular.  A nivel general puede causar efectos sobre el sistema respiratorio como insufiencia respiratoria, edema, a nivel cardiovascular alteracion del ritmo cardiaco, a nivel neurologico alteraciones neuromusculares, cognitivas, motoras, sus efectos tambien se establecen sobre el sistema gastrointestinal, inmunologico, cutaneo, renal y en la reproduccion humana.
