The President of the United States, despite being flanked by members of his security detail, stood looked into the cameras in silence. He waited there for over a minute, and still there was no applause. He stood silently while several groups around the nation expressed their dismay. Rising above the rest was one group, known to the rest as CallToArms. They were a group of Americans who were disgusted with the way their country was ruling. They did not appreciate the government’s use of money to continue the war in Iraq, and they despised the government for condoning the fine on BP for the oil spill that had done so much damage to the environment. They wanted change. It was time for change. They were going to get change.

“My fellow Americans,” the President began, “I come to you tonight to announce a bold action.”

“Now you listen, you freaking moron. You’ve done enough damage to this country. There’s nothing you can do to get us on your side. If you want change, change yourself. Don’t change what we have. We aren’t perfect, but we’re the best thing we’ve got going right now. And you’re going to ruin it for us.”

The President stared into the cameras, listening to what this group was saying. He hated to listen to them, and he desperately did not want to listen to them, but he knew he had to. He had to listen to them. He had to listen to hear what they would say and how they would say it. He had to listen to hear what they had to offer. He had to listen and hear their plan for change.

The President stood there silently listening as a woman called out.

“And what will you do about these terrorists? They’re screwing up the world. What are you going to do about them?”

The President stood silent, but he froze. He knew what the answer was. He had to have an answer. He could not just stand here and say he’d do nothing about them. Then he would be accused of being weak. He could not stand here and say he was going to respond with force. They’d accuse him of trying to keep a war going. No, he would have to say something. He would have to answer her. He could not just ignore her.

“As president,” the President said, “I cannot bring about all the changes the people of this great country want. Our administration has successfully avoided a war with Pakistan and has avoided an escalation of our involvement in Iraq. I have done what is best to minimize our involvement in these two conflicts. This keeps the country safe and keeps us out of war.”

“First talk about those greedy pigs that this government is so in love with—BP. Are you going to fine them only $25,000? Only $25,000? What the hell is that? And then you talk about making this country safe. By who’s standards? Yours? You’ve done nothing safe for this country, you moron. You took us to war for nothing. If you would have listened to the American people, we would have been perfectly fine without going to war, opening our borders, and getting involved with such corrupt governments. You haven’t made this country safe. You’ve made us unsafe.”

“But, my friends, there are changes that have to be made. There are things we have to do. There are people we need to respond to. There are threats to this country we cannot ignore.”

“First of all, the one-and-only thing that you’ve done for this country is get us into trouble. You and your idiot friends have put this country into more danger and more debt than any president before you. Also, you need to quit trying to rule this planet. It may be fun to have control of everything, but you’re ruining it for us. You’re doing nothing to take care of our food supply. You’re getting our fuel supply down. You’re ruining our environment. You’re ruining this country. You’re reaping destruction on what this country was built on. You’re responsible for causing hardships on what made this country great. You’re going to pay for everything you’ve done.”

The President, like he always did, stopped and looked in the eyes of that one woman who had trouble expressing herself. She was just as angry and just as upset as he had ever seen her. Same with every one of the citizens of this nation.

“But what would your plan for change be?” the woman asked. “I don’t see any plan of yours to change anything. Just tell us what the plan is. What’s the plan?”

When the President was silent, another group began to speak. This group, known to the rest of the world as the CallToArms, had caused this entire mess. They were the ones who had actually taken it upon themselves to do something, to get the country out of a war, keep money out of war, and take back what the President had taken from the people. They were the ones who had decided to do something. They were the ones who had decided to make a move.

“First,” the group began, “you need to answer us for BP. You need to show us a plan for them. Bring the President of BP to Congress, and make him answer to that fine and to any fines that come before him. He needs to be punished, but you’re letting him get away with murder. It’s time for the President to stand with justice. BP needs to be fined, and they need to pay restitution to this country for their actions against our citizens.”

“Second,” the group continued, “you need to fulfill your promise to change the nation back to what it once was. We need to go back to what this country was to the people. We need America to be what it once was. We need America to be America. We need to go back to the Constitution. We need to go back to the rights that are given to us. We need to go back to the rights to practice our rights are we please. We need to do things the right way. This corrupt government that has worked alone, for its own gain, with no regard for what it’s doing to the rest of us is wrong. It needs to be stopped. We need to stop it. You’ve done nothing to stop it. I tell you, it’s time to stop it. We need to yell loud about this. We need to yell loud that this is wrong. We can no longer live like this any longer. We need to practice our rights, and this government sure as hell ain’t doing it.”

The President looked upon the CallToArms and was moved to tears. He seemed to understand their anger. He knew how upset they were. He knew how angry they were. He knew that they were doing what they needed to do. He knew that the country would be better off in the long run for their doing something.

“But,” the President began, “my friends, there are still threats to this country we cannot ignore. There are terrorists, and they will do everything they can to keep this nation from being what the people want it to be. They are operating in space, and they will stop at nothing to destroy this nation and the rest of it. In order to prevent this nation from becoming anything but what we want it to be, we need to do everything we can to take care of the threat that these terrorists represent.

“We need to look at the problem of these terrorists in space. They are destroying our satellites, and they are having a severe impact on the use of satellites all over the earth. We need to do something about this. We need to find a way to combat these terrorists and their threat to this nation. We need to come to a solution to the problem.”

“So you’re talking about fighting them in space? It’s time for the government to pick up the pieces where NASA left off. It’s time for this government to spend one-tenth the money it’s spending on war to turn this country around. It’s time for the Space Agency Civilian Department to be funded as separate entities, and it’s time to get the job done. We cannot sit idly by while these terrorists destroy our country. We cannot sit idly by while our world becomes a war zone. We cannot allow this country to become the terrorists’ launch pad. We need to stop them. We need to make them pay.”

“And,” the woman called out, “you need to stop this war in Iraq. You need to listen to us when we say that we are not going to continue to have a war that is killing our citizens, destroying our country, and destroying our economy.”

“And finally,” the man said, “you need to do something about this government. This government that is destroying the economy and everything around it, corrupting everything it touches with its greed, sleeping with its staff, and its illegal working habits. This government that has ceased giving to the programs that have made this country great. This government that continues to strip away at the key items that give our existence its meaning. You need to do something about this government. Such as fixing the health care for Americans, raising our minimum wage, raising the taxes on the wealthy, and reducing the wasted energies.”

“And the most important thing of all,” the woman said, “is voting out every single one of these incompetent politicians. Your vote can change the way things are in Washington, D.C. The people out there need to listen to how all of this has affected them. You need to make your feelings known, and this will help to stop these wars from happening again. Let the people know how this has affected you, and let them know what they need to do to help to change things.”

The President shook his head and thought about what the citizens had just said to him. They were right. He knew with all his heart they were right. Men, women, children, they all knew how this had affected them. They felt betrayed. They wanted change. They wanted their country back. They wanted their lives back. They wanted their government back. This was why a lot of them had lost their jobs and homes. They had lost everything because of the unconscionable government. They did not like it. And they had a right to be angry. But they did not need to worry about their safety.

The government would not allow anything to happen to them. With this nation’s military power and technological prowess, these people would be kept safe. The government would respond to any threat.

The government cared. The government was conscious of the needs and priorities of the people. The government was aware of the needs of the country. The government would do what it could to ensure the safety and security of every American.

The government would make sure everything continued to be as it should be. Again, the people could count on that.

The President began discussing with the people the way things were. He told them he understood their anger and their disgust. He understood their frustration. He took their feelings to heart and would not let them down. He would listen to their wishes and would bring America back to the representative government the people had enjoyed for so long. He would keep the people safe, and he would bring back to the country what the government had so long ago taken away.

The President told the people everything he planned to do to make it right. Every promise he had ever made to them, he would keep. The people believed him. They believed those promises.

The people trusted the American Government and the American President. The people of America were strong. They were strong by their will, their character, their morality, and their love for this country.

The people had something to do, and they knew what to do. They knew what they had to do for themselves. They had to listen to their President and remember what he had said. They had to remember his words and words of another. They had to remember what he had told them.

The people had to remember the words of another most of all. They had to remember the words of a man who had suffered so greatly for what he believed.

The people had to remember the words of the Protestant minister Martin Luther King Jr. and his most famous words: “I have a dream…”

The people had to remember the government they had and the government they had elected. And they had to believe in them. They had to believe in a government that would rather die than betray the trust of those dependent upon them.
