Les cuento una cosa: _soy una amante empedernida del café_. Para muchas personas quizás esta pueda resultar ser más que una simple bebida, pues en realidad se ha convertido en una forma de intimar, de sentir, de comunicarnos, tanto así que su simple aroma nos permite evocar lindos recuerdos y dibujar una sonrisa en nuestros rostros.Si nos ponemos un tanto filosóficos, podríamos encontrar un gran valor en una simple taza de café pues esta no sólo cumple con la función de acompañar a una persona para iniciar su día con su energía, sino también, una taza de café puede dar pie a una larga conversación, una taza de café puede curarnos el alma e incluso una taza de café también puede disfrutarse en compañía de una persona querida para así crear momentos inolvidables…al menos yo sí que he tenido gratos recuerdos junto a una buena taza de café, quizás esta es una de las tantas razones por las que disfruto tanto de tomar una taza de un buen café.

En mi país, Venezuela, digamos que tenemos un especial apego por el café. Me atrevo a decir que muchas familias venezolanas inician su día preparando un cafecito bien cargado y dulzón para acompañar con las arepas de desayuno e incluso cuando llega una persona de visita a nuestro hogar es muy común para nosotros darle la bienvenida con una taza de café…es que lo primero que ofrecemos ni siquiera es agua, no, ¡es café! Sí, para nosotros básicamente el café es como una tradición y está presente en nuestro día a día, desde que nos levantamos hasta que nos vamos a dormir (literalmente).

>In my country, Venezuela, let's say that we have a special attachment to coffee. I dare say that many Venezuelan families start their day preparing a very strong and sweet coffee to go with the arepas for breakfast and even when a visitor arrives to our home it is very common for us to welcome him/her with a cup of coffee... the first thing we offer is not even water, no, it is coffee! Yes, for us coffee is basically like a tradition and it is present in our daily life, from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep (literally).

No sé cómo será en otros países pero al menos aquí en Venezuela tenemos diferentes maneras de pedir el café cuando vamos a un restaurant o a una cafetería e incluso cuando lo preparamos en casa. No sólo se encuentra el típico café negro, oscuro o “levanta muertos” como le digo yo, también podemos pedir un “guayoyo” que se trata de una variación del café negro pero menos fuerte y más claro. Por otra parte, tenemos al  “café marrón” que, para ser sinceros, es una mezcla misteriosa porque muchas personas lo confunden con el café con leche, pero en Venezuela la proporción de líquidos para preparar un café marrón es mitad leche y mitad café. Por otra parte, tenemos también al “marrón oscuro” que es mi favorito porque consiste en más café que leche, pues el café termina teniendo entre el 70 y 80% de proporción con respecto al líquido. Y, por supuesto, si tenemos un marrón oscuro debemos de tener también un “marrón claro” que tiene más leche que café, más o menos la cantidad de leche estaría entre un 60 y 70% de proporción con respecto al líquido. Este café marrón claro no debe confundirse con el clásico “café con leche” pues en este último la proporción de leche suele ser más del 70% del líquido.

Y…¿cómo es que sé todo esto de proporciones? Bueno, realmente la mayoría de los Venezolanos saben diferenciar entre un café y otro en base a su experiencia pero no conocen demasiado de proporciones. Yo, como soy bastante curiosa, en algún momento de mi vida me tomé la tarea de investigar sobre este asunto porque quería comprender las diferentes formas que tenemos de pedir café en las cafeterías Venezolanas. 

Ahora, hablando de café con leche…¡este es el café que muchos Venezolanos le tenemos un particular aprecio! Nosotros tenemos una especial tradición de preparar café con leche para las meriendas y acompañarlo con un trozo de pan dulce o incluso alguna galleta…¡esta es la mejor merienda del mundo! Le podrás preguntar a cualquier venezolano sobre esto y te dirá lo mismo que yo te estoy diciendo. Particularmente a mí me encanta el café con leche como lo preparan mi abuela y mi suegra pues ellas agregan directamente leche en polvo al café caliente recién preparado y simplemente lo mezclan pero no lo mezclan demasiado porque procuran dejar uno que otro grumo de leche en suspensión…los grumitos de leche en polvo son los que le dan un valor especial a ese café con leche que preparan estas dos mujeres.

And, of course, if we have a dark brown we must also have a _**"light brown"**_ that has more milk than coffee, more or less the amount of milk would be between 60 and 70% of proportion with respect to the liquid. This light brown coffee should not be confused with the classic _**"coffee with milk"**_ because in the latter the proportion of milk is usually more than 70% of the liquid.

>And... how do I know all this about proportions? Well, actually most Venezuelans know how to differentiate between one coffee and another based on their experience but they don't know much about proportions. I, being quite curious, at some point in my life I took on the task of researching this subject because I wanted to understand the different ways we have of ordering coffee in Venezuelan coffee shops. 

>Now, speaking of coffee with milk... this is the coffee that many Venezuelans have a particular appreciation for! We have a special tradition of preparing coffee with milk for snacks and accompanying it with a piece of sweet bread or even a cookie...this is the best snack in the world! You can ask any Venezuelan about this and they will tell you the same thing I am telling you. I particularly love coffee with milk the way my grandmother and my mother-in-law prepare it because they add powdered milk directly to the hot coffee just prepared and they simply mix it but they don't mix it too much because they try to leave some lumps of milk in suspension...the little lumps of powdered milk are what give a special value to the coffee with milk prepared by these two women.

Como les comentaba, yo soy una fanática loca del café y me encanta visitar muchas cafeterías de mi ciudad. De hecho, en la ciudad de Caracas, existen muchas cafeterías maravillosas que no sólo brindan un buen café sino que también el ambiente que poseen es increíble y simplemente provoca quedarse viviendo en el lugar de lo lindo y agradable que resulta ser porque, a decir verdad, a veces no sólo se trata del café sino de todo lo demás que gira en torno a él.
