http://localinternet.info/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/internet-inventions-604x270.jpg

So, have you ever think who actually invented the internet? Some people became Billionaire thanks to the internet. But all they did invented clever ways of using the internet. So the person who "invented the internet" should be a zillionaire are equivalent to, say God shouldn't they? Who should get the credit, then?

Thanks to a myriad of clever scientists working on some thing they knew was useful, but did not realize would be so Big?

Let's try to get some facts straight. There's the internet. A whole bunch of computer networks connected to each other and then there is the WWW (world wide web), A way of making it simpler to share data using all those interconnected computer. The internet as we know it today was at the least 40 years in the making.

http://bnrg.cs.berkeley.edu/~randy/Courses/CS39C.S97/gifs/imp.jpg

One popular but incorrect story is that the internet was invented by america, so that they had a communication network that would survive on a nuclear war. According to one of the founders of the first network, The ARPANET in the 1960s, this first network experiment wasn't about communication at all; it was about optimizing processor usage or time sharing, which basically meant that scientists could share computer power too. That was because until the 1960s there was no network - you had Big and heavy machines called mainframes which sat in the Room and processed computing tasks one as a time. with time sharing these Big machines could process many tasks at a time, which mean their power will be used by several scientists at once. And, obviously when you start connecting computer systems together you start to wonder about what you need to do to make communications between them easier. Scientists around the world were attempting to solve this problem. So let's have a look at some of the other key concepts that were developed somewhere else.

https://i.guim.co.uk/img/static/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2013/6/25/1372186437660/Roger-Scantlebury-Derek-B-008.jpg?w=620&q=55&auto=format&usm=12&fit=max&s=36f8b8983153b97728a7dd6b389e8560

Starting with packet switching, In Britain, there was a commercial network developed by the National Physical Laboratory, But which never got off the ground because it did not get funding. But they did come up with the concept of packet switching, A way of avoiding congestion in busy networks by means cutting up data at one end and placing it back together at the other side.

http://images.computerhistory.org/timeline/timeline_networking.web_1968.mother.demo.jpg

The French also performed a Role. They are working on a scientific network referred to CYCLADES, But they didn't have a Big Budget range, so they decided to work on direct connections between computers, instead of working with gateway computer. Now as an aside here, this admittedly is not very scientific, But according to one concept, a spin-off of their research became the word "internet". But you don't have to believe if you don't want to.

http://cdn.telecomtv.com/assets/telecomtv/dog-tcp-ip-2144.jpg?w=970

So now it's the early 1970s. There a lots of computer infrastructure, But communications is awkward and patchy, because specific networks cannot speak to each other. TCP/IP solves this problem. The tcp/ip protocols form the fundamental communication language of the internet, Which labels the packets of information and ensure that even though some pieces of the same data take a different route, They all arrive at their destination spot and can be reassembled. Networks began communicating with every other in 1975, So that you could argue that was the beginning of the internet. E-mail was also very important. It was developed for ARPANET in 1972. Most internet traffic in 1976 was e mail, Due to the fact academic thoughts electronic post-it notes were lifeless. With networks that could talk to each other, Communication changed into becoming less complicated. But all this communication was just textual content based and it was pretty ugly to look at.

http://www.murderati.com/storage/bernerslee-404_682192c.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1312633238994

In the 1980s, A brit called Timothy berners-lee spend time with CERN, The european company for nuclear research, where physicists are trying to find what the universe is made of. He wanted to manage the scientists information and make it possible for them to share their work easily, making development much more likely. He did so inventing an interface with the use of HTTP, HTML and urls that made internet browsers possible. He called his browser the world Wide web. So he did not invent the internet but he did invent the web. The first website, which he created, was at CERN in france in August 1991.

So once the basic infrastructure was in place, the important technologies had been invented, internet message boards exploded in the 1980s, The phone companies saw the industrial capability of digital communications, Web browsers spread like wildfire in early 1990s, and ordinary humans discovered e-mail, then the internet expanded rapidly and steadily and have become workable for the masses from 1995.

https://d3ifdxgl1umrn6.cloudfront.net/attachments/store/fit/650/500/b83a349d23734d3e06a90a60cd81f3e4bbd45263d3ad80ce5860f28152dc/image.jpg

Hold on did not US vice president Al Gore invented the internet?

No and in case if you study what he said exactly you'll know he never claimed to have done. But many people credit him with energetically pushing legislation that encouraged the spread of the internet. The internet exists because we need to communicate with each other, and most of us like doing it. That's why people have become the dominant species on the planet. Internet wasn't invented by someone, But when the blocks had been positioned together with the help of all those cool scientists from all over the world. The internet become a communication device, a retail tool, a research device, a propaganda device, spying tool,a shopping tool a dating tool and entertainment device, and a way of skiving off work at the same time as making. it seem like you are working or studying which is what you may be doing now. Ultimately, though you're communicating, in case you leave a comment and that might make you a better human being.

Article source - I Write this article by reserching on the history and invertion of internet from the resources below-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet

http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/09/history-internet/

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001016.htm

http://www.nethistory.info/History%20of%20the%20Internet/origins.html

http://www.walthowe.com/navnet/history.html

If you enjoyed, Follow me @masonmiler for more content just like this, and as always, take care of yourselves, and take care of each other :)

Thanks. I remembered about this ARPANET thing but I thought DoD also had something to do with it. Cannot be sure though.

Great article. I just recently found out through my own studies how Cern was a key central point in helping create the internet.

When a submarine is deep in the ocean , layers of water act as insulators ; called inversion layers or boundaries that disrupt communications. Thus an EAM can usually only be three letters long, it can take minutes to hours to sometimes send these Emergency Action Messages. The message could mean surface for more details or fire your nuclear missiles at your assigned targets or whatever. But the point is reliable uninterruptible communications, so the boss can tell the worker what to do . . . The Idea of the internet was in part this same principle, no matter what destruction occurred any aggressor could not reliably guarantee all and every telephone line would be disabled. Thus by the destruction of C3 depots , Command, Control and Communication centers would never stop some messages reaching fight back missiles and remote planes. Thus the internet once made made nuclear war " Impossible " the internet guaranteed MAD. MAD = Mutually Agreed Destruction , simply no one could ever fire weapons of mass destruction at an organised enemy. This is because the enemy would always have enough weapons to fatally weaken the attacker. If that attacker was severely crippled by retaliation another country would choose to destroy it. This meant that nuclear weapons could never be used, of course this never stopped the Army, Navy and Air Force having over one thousand nuclear accidents involving these mass killing devices each and every year : ) But seriously do you think your media would report such a thing ; )

The US military certainly coalesced the project that became the internet, but as the author of the post explains, it was built on top of numerous innovations that were mostly for scientists wanting to share mainframes. A lot of people don't know or understand that the internet cannot be 'shut down'. It uses primitive precursors of modern blockchain systems to develop network wide consensus of topology, and peering between nodes to monetise the building of the connections. It is nearly mathematically impossible to shut down the internet, and that was true in the late 70s, now, you can just forget about it. It's political hyperbole.

I must admit I truly love the legal aspect of the internet ! ! ! Some true Real Life cases have appeared before Superior Court Judges relating to media piracy laws, many times this SENIOR Judge has MADE a Court ORDER . . . The person running the website has replied " Ah ; Sorry Your Honor , I cannot do that ! ! ! " The Judge goes into an apoplectic fit about Contempt of Court ... The accused then has to explain how the internet is wider than their reach, simply P2P is beyond their ability to monitor nor shut down ! ! ! This New Age Millennium is just pure craziness : ) Imagine an experienced Court Judge being told " ah; Sorry , No can do " ; )
