But in the aftermath of this statement, US President Trump banned the app for security reasons. He is concerned that TikTok will disclose the data it collects from Americans to the Chinese government.
After a conversation between CEO Satya Nadella and Trump about a possible deal, the US software company announced that TikTok's US business would be purchased on terms set by the White House. Negotiations are expected to be launched quickly with TikTok ByteDance parent company. The goal is to complete the transaction by September 15.
According to Microsoft's blog, discussions with ByteDance are preliminary, but it guarantees that once it takes over TikTok in the US, all personal data of US users will be located in the country and all foreign data stored or saved will be deleted after transfer. Additionally, if the acquisition is successful, Microsoft assures that it will add world-class security protection, privacy protection, and digital security protection to TikTok.
President Trump and government officials have taken steps such as banning the use of TikTok by military and government agencies because information may be leaked to TikTok. However, ByteDance has always denied any relationship with the Chinese government, claiming that if Chinese authorities asked for user data, they would refuse.
If TikTok is acquired by Microsoft, it means that Microsoft will own and operate TikTok not only in the United States, but also in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
