An unidentified flying object (UFO) is referred to a suspected alien spacecraft, although it's definition encircles any unexplained aerial phenomena. The sightings of UFO have been reported in different parts of the world , a lot of questions have been asked about life in other planets and whether this strange objects or beings (extraterrestrials) have visited planet earth. UFO have become a prevalent theme in modern culture,and the social phenomena have been the subject of academic research both in sociology and psychology as well as the inspiration behind many books and movies. 

In the late 1940s and through the 1950s, UFO is often referred to as "flying saucer" or "flying discs".
The term UFO became prevalent during the 1950s, at first in technical literature, but later in popular use. UFO garnered considerable interest during the Cold War, an era associated with a heightened concern for national security, and more recently, in 2010, for some unexplained reasons.

The first well-known UFO sightings said occurred sometime in 1947, when a business man called [Kenneth arnold](http://www.history.com/topics/kenneth-arnold) claimed to see a group of about  nine high speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his little plane. 
He estimated the speed of the flying saucers to be several thousand miles per hour.
Other reports about UFO are varied widely in reliability, quite a number of judgement by different independent witnesses observed the UFO in different conditions for example: fog, haze, type of illumination and the direction of sighting. 
Witnesses who sighted the "flying object" considered the object to be of extraterrestrial origin or possibly a military craft but certainly under intelligent control. Considering the strange shape, lack of noise and the the colour of the objects. 

### Ufology 

Ufology is a coined word used in describing the collective efforts of those who study UFO reports and associated evidence. Some ufologists recommend that observations be classified according to the features of the phenomenon or object that are reported or recorded. Such features include;  Saucer,  disks shaped "craft" without visible or audible propulsion, Large triangular "craft" or triangular light pattern, usually reported at night, Cigar shaped "craft" with lighted windows (meteor fireballs are sometimes reported this way, but are very different phenomena), chevrons, (equilateral) triangles, crescent, boomerangs, spheres (usually reported to be shining, glowing at night), domes, diamonds, shapeless black masses, eggs, pyramids and cylinders, classic "lights."

Aliens are intelligent extraterrestrial beings which does not originate from Earth.

### Scientific skepticism 

One of the scientific skepticism about UFOs came as a result of a scenario that occurred in Indonesia, it was argued that an UFO was responsible for the crop circles that appeared within the country, but the government and [National Institute of Aeronautics and Space ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Institute_of_Aeronautics_and_Space ) described it as man made. A renowned professor of astronomy and astrophysics Thomas Djamaluddin said "the incident can not be scientifically proven". Scientists have put UFOs in the category of [pseudoscience](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoscience)

### Conspiracy Theories

UFOs sometimes are element of conspiracy theories in which governments are allegedly wittingly covering up the existence of aliens by taking out physical evidence of their presence, or even collaborating with extraterrestrial beings. There are many versions of this story; some are exclusive, while others overlap with various other conspiracy theories.In America for instance, sometime around 1997 an opinion poll was conducted, the result of the poll suggested that 80% of Americans believed the U.S. government was withholding such information. Although some notable individuals have also expressed such views. astronauts Gordon Cooper and Edgar Mitchell , Senator Barry Goldwater, Vice Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter (the first CIA director).
