Raspberry pi: it is berry nice

<p>A couple of months ago I got a Raspberry π as one of my Phd defense 
gifts. Unfortunately, it is not an edible π but a tiny computer. This 
was my first time getting my hands on one so I had some fun playing

 picture above is the Raspberry pi 3 Model B+&nbsp; developed by the 
Raspberry Pi foundation which is a non-profit organization in the UK.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
Raspberry pi 3 Model B+ is their latest and best model. In&nbsp; this post I 
will give some general info about the pi and how I am using it. There is
 also a bit of technical stuff but there also a few puns. So feel free

 the conventional stuff like WIFI, USB etc.&nbsp; it also has some 
interesting stuff (which I am not sure I will ever use) like a camera 
port and a display port for a touchscreen.&nbsp; If you are interested about 
all the stats check the [Foundation's 
website](https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-3-model-b-plus/)&nbsp;
 <br><br>Depending on where you buy one you might get a couple of 
cooling elements to paste on the part which you want to make the 
*coolest* XD. Probabably not actually needed unless you start 
overclocking it. You can also get a pretty case like the one I have but 
there are also way prettier ones like tiny boxes with a tiny *fan* which
 will cheer the Pi so that it will feel *cool*.There are other ways to 
*pi*-mp it, like [these console 
cases](https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/raspberry-pi-game-console/)<br></p><p>If
 it is your first go at a Raspberry Pi then it probably easiest to get 
started buy getting a box with all the things in there.&nbsp; They are 
funnily enought actually called 
[ABOXes](https://www.aboxtek.com/products/abox-raspberry-pi-3b-32gb).&nbsp; <br><br></p><h3>I know I cannot eat it. But what can I do with it?</h3><p>So
 what can you do with a Raspberry pi? Loads of amazing things. You can 
turn it into a tiny gaming console for old school games using the 
so-called [Retro-pi](https://retropie.org.uk/), you can turn it into a 
VPN router if your VPN-providers offers you too few accounts, you can of
 course use it as a dedicated bot server and it of course also functions
 as a tiny computer.&nbsp; For all these things the guides are just available
 online so it is pretty easy to get things done.<br><br></p><h3>Software, don't worry it is soft but also a bit hard</h3><p>A
 Rasberry pi comes ordinarily with same kind of easy install for linux. I
 think linux is awesome, although I haven't really used it for stuff 
outside academia. So linux might have been a bit scary 20 years ago but 
nowadays it is pretty much as easy to use as windows. If you are a 
windows user and are afraid that somehow it won't be able to connect to 
your windows don't worry. You can use the program 
[Putty](https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html) 
to connect to the Pi and then access the actual linux desktop using 
something like [tightVNC](https://www.tightvnc.com/). Transferring data 
from windows to linux can be easily done using 
[winSCP](https://winscp.net/eng/download.php) It sounds complicated but 
if you just follow any guide it should be a *cake* walk :D&nbsp; <br><br></p><h3>For what am I using it?</h3><p>I
 only have a super light laptop which is not very suitable for running 
anything so I thought it would be fun to use it to run some dedicated 
processes for the steem blockchain. Currently, I have turned it into 
something like a decentralized voting service which allows specific 
users to upvote stuff. Read a bit more over [here](https://steemit.com/fun/@regularowl/say-my-name-so-that-my-power-might-flow-through-you)&nbsp; In terms of speed 
the raspberry pi seems to work great for these type of things. Note that
 the reason why it is quick is probably because it only stalks the posts
 of specific user. So it is not a very heavy process.<br><br></p><h3>Final note</h3><p><br>If
 you are convinced to buy a Pi after reading this post. Great! But it 
might be a good idea to wait a bit. The Rasberry Pi foundation is 
currently working on the [4 
model](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/raspberry-pi-4-everything-we-know,38539.html)
 which will be about the same price range as the 3 model so if you think
 about buying one it might be a good idea to wait a bit, even if you 
really want to buy the 3 model since probably its price might drop on 
release of the 4 model :P<br><br><br></p>

Raspis are really nice to make smaller "servers". The workload can be pretty pretty high for such a small thing. I had an autoguider for my scope running on an Raspi 2 wich has taken each second an image and corrected the position of the telescope mount. Also a small DSLR controller was running on it.

Thanks for noticing the error. :o)

That is a pretty cool use of the pi. Do you have any experience with water proofing the pi? I was thinking this morning to use a pi for an automised sensor based camera so that I can take some photos of the birds at the feederbox :o)

I have put it in a metal and plastic case. It was not 100% waterproof. Will you use the Raspi camera or a third-party USB one? I would say that every case that you seal up could be work. Maybe you have to check the temperature inside. I would also put a small packet silica gel or some rice inside to absorb the humidity.
Just found a case like this https://www.hammfg.com/part/RP1215C
Maybe the plastic is clear enough to get a good image quality or if not, the lens could look through a hole.

As long as you are talking about cake when saying pi - not the British perversion of pi.
