Although lately we call anything intelligent, it is true that artificial intelligence has evolved spectacularly in the last decade, however at the moment the brain of the most layman of all humans far exceeds the abilities of the most powerful of all computers intended for artificial intelligence.

That is why a group of researchers from Western Sydney University have launched a supercomputer project, capable of simulating human brain networks at scale using a neuromorphic system. It is called DeepSouth Supercomputer and scientists hope it will be operational next year 2024.

Unlike conventional computer systems, this new supercomputer has been designed from the beginning with an architecture designed to function in the same way as a huge neural network and will be capable of emulating the human brain, reaching peaks of up to 228 billion synaptic operations per second.

From the International Center for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) of the university they assure that this would be equivalent to the estimated rate of operations that the human brain can perform, with the difference that a human brain performs all these operations with a minimum fraction of the energy who needs a super computer with these characteristics.

According to the director of the ICNS, “Simulation of spiking neural networks on standard equipment using multicore graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs) is too slow and consumes a lot of energy,” so the architecture of DeepSouth promises to be very different.
