It is fascinating how in little more than a decade the mode of generation and use of energy has totally changed, we have gone from a total dependence on fossil fuels to obtaining energy in the most original and clean ways, both in its generation and in its storage, as is the case that we are discussing today with the concrete battery.

In order to end this dependency, we are all aware of the prevailing need for energy storage solutions that can counteract the intermittent nature of the energy obtained through renewable processes such as solar and wind energy.

Since fossil fuels intrinsically store energy, until a couple of decades ago, too sophisticated energy storage methods had not been developed, but the socio-economic situation changes and now we need to store energy, so new devices are being invented every day.

>Dado que los combustibles fósiles almacenan intrínsecamente la energía, hasta hace un par de décadas no se habían desarrollado métodos de almacenamiento de energía demasiado sofisticados pero, la situación socioeconómica cambia y ahora necesitamos almacenar la energía por lo que cada día se inventan nuevos dispositivos.

A group of researchers from the Chalmers University of Technology have developed a rechargeable battery made of concrete to which small amounts of short carbon fibers are added, which increase conductivity as well as resistance to bending, then they add to the mix a metal coated carbon fiber mesh that will give it its electrical properties..

>Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad Tecnológica Chalmers han desarrollado una batería recargable construida a base de hormigón al que se añaden pequeñas cantidades de fibras de carbono cortas, que consiguen aumentar la conductividad además de la resistencia a la flexión, a continuación se añade a la mezcla una malla de fibra de carbono recubierta de metal que le conferirá sus propiedades eléctricas.

With all this, a concrete-based battery is achieved with an average energy density of 7 w / h per square meter, this does not seem like a big deal a priori but we must bear in mind that these batteries will have the size of big buildings, which at least witll make these buildings energy self-sustaining.

>Con todo esto se consigue una batería basada en hormigón con una densidad media energética de 7 w/h por metro cuadrado, esto a priori no parece gran cosa pero hemos de tener en cuenta que estas baterías tendrán el tamaño de edificios de varias plantas, lo que es fácil que haga que estos edificios sean auto sostenibles energéticamente. 

This concrete can also be coupled with solar panels that would recharge these batteries that could not only be used in buildings but also in civil engineering infrastructures that could have all sorts of sensors and IoT devices incorporated into the concrete taking from it the energy needed to function.

>A este hormigón también se la pueden acoplar paneles solares que irían recargando estas baterías que, no solo podrían ser utilizadas en edificios sino también en infraestructuras de ingeniería civil que podrían llevar incorporados en el propio hormigón toda suerte de sensores y dispositivos IoT que obtendrían de éste la energía necesaria para funcionar.
