When the COVID-19 RNA is present in the patient sample provided, the CRISPR-Cas13 complex cuts the probes or biomarkers which makes them light up and can be detected by a smartphone camera and can give a positive result or negative in a time between 15 and 30 minutes.

This technique was developed with the collaboration, among others, of Jennifer Doudna, a Nobel Prize winner in 2020 with Emmanuelle Charpantier precisely for their contribution to the knowledge of this genetic editing tool called CRISPR.
