Wildfires cause devastating damage globally, both environmentally and economically and socially, destroying habitats, leading to the loss of plant and animal species, some of which are endemic and endangered, not to mention significant economic losses due to the destruction of infrastructure, crops and forests, as well as the costs of extinction and recovery.

To mitigate these effects as much as possible, Google has launched an initiative that aims to use a network of satellites to detect forest fires. The project is called FireSat and has been developed in collaboration with the Earth Fire Alliance and with the support of the Moore Foundation. It will be able to identify fires as small as 5x5 metres, allowing for early detection that is crucial for a rapid response.

>Para mitigar en lo posible estos efectos Google ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa que pretende utilizar una red de satélites para detectar incendios forestales. El proyecto se llama FireSat y ha sido desarrollado en colaboración con Earth Fire Alliance y con el apoyo de la Moore Foundation, podrá identificar focos de incendio de tan solo 5x5 metros, lo que permite una detección temprana crucial para una respuesta rápida.

The satellites will provide updated images every twenty minutes, allowing constant monitoring of the evolution of the fires in order to analyse potential risks and act accordingly. The satellite network will offer global coverage, making it possible to detect fires anywhere in the world, even in remote areas.

>Los satélites proporcionarán imágenes actualizadas cada veinte minutos, lo que permitirá un seguimiento constante de la evolución de los incendios para analizar los riesgos potenciales y actuar en consecuencia. La red de satélites ofrecerá una cobertura global, permitiendo detectar incendios en cualquier parte del mundo, incluso en áreas remotas.

Obviously, artificial intelligence plays a fundamental role in this project. Images of the Earth's surface taken by satellites will be compared with images with historical data using AI, which will allow the detection of significant changes in the landscape, such as the appearance of smoke or the alteration of vegetation that would indicate a possible fire.

>Obviamente en este proyecto la inteligencia artificial juega un papel fundamental, las imágenes de la superficie terrestre tomadas por los satélites  se compararán con imágenes con datos históricos mediante IA, que permitirán detectar cambios significativos en el paisaje, como la aparición de humo o la alteración de la vegetación que delatarían un posible incendio.

In addition, FireSat will take into account other factors such as the presence of roads, human settlements or other structures that can help determine the likelihood that a hot spot is a real fire. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and wind can also influence the spread of a fire and will also be considered in the analysis.

>Además, FireSat tomará en cuenta otros factores como la presencia de carreteras, asentamientos humanos u otras estructuras que pueden ayudar a determinar la probabilidad de que un punto caliente sea un incendio real. Así mismo factores ambientales como la temperatura, la humedad y el viento pueden influir en la propagación de un incendio y también serán considerados en el análisis.

It must be admitted that, while it is true that Google is just another of these big companies that basically try to get our money, since its beginnings it has been the one that has made available to users a lot of really useful free tools that I am not going to list and the FireSat project also promises to be really useful for everyone.

>Hay que reconocer que, si bien es cierto que Google es una más de estas grandes compañías que, básicamente, se esfuerzan en sacarnos el dinero, desde sus inicios ha sido la que ha puesto a disposición de los usuarios un montón de herramientas gratuitas realmente útiles que no voy a enumerar y el proyecto FireSat también promete ser realmente útil para todos.
