The treatment of tumors generally goes through chemotherapy sessions, this treatment consists of attacking all cells that reproduce abnormally fast as it happens with tumors, but there are certain types of cells that grow faster than average and these are also attacked by chemotherapy.

Initially, the scientists chose to work with bacteria of the genus 'Magnetospirillum', which are naturally magnetic due to the iron oxide particles they contain, which make these bacteria respond to magnetic fields, which allows them to be controlled by magnets from outside the body

In tests carried out with cell cultures and mice, the team of researchers have found that using a rotating magnetic field applied to the tumor helps bacteria to more easily cross the vascular wall that is close to the tumor driven by this magnetic field.

Once the bacteria have crossed the blood vessel wall and reach the tumor, they can autonomously migrate into the tumor using their natural means of locomotion, so the external magnetic field is only used for one hour, which is enough time to for bacteria to reach the tumor.
