An unexpected visit brings us closer to salvation👹🍣🎎 Wonderful Japan

During our last visit to Tokyo, we quite often walked on paths we already knew, but we also didn't miss the opportunity to explore a bit of new territory in the Japanese capital. On our excursions, we always looked a little aside the ways we walked and managed to get to see quite a few things. It's usually these spontaneous discoveries that stick in the mind and remain vivid as memories.

On the way back from the Sumida River, we passed a temple in the north of Asakusa, which quickly attracted my attention. Already from the street I felt this special feeling, which I have already felt so often here in the land of the rising sun. My curiosity was immediately aroused and I could easily convince my companions to follow me. After all, we all wanted to see and experience something new, and the day was not yet over.

We entered the grounds of Matsuchiyama Shoden, one of the oldest temples in Tokyo, which is located on a small hill. The temple's beginnings date back over 1400 years, and it is one of the constituent temples of the famous and nearby Sensoji Temple, which is one of Tokyo's most popular attractions.

According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Suiko, Mount Matsuchi suddenly rose from the earth and a golden dragon descended from the sky to protect it. During a severe drought six years later, the Buddhist deity "Kannon" took pity on the hardships of the people and appeared in the form of Daisho-Kangi- Ten to bring immediate salvation and redemption.

The Buddist theology and mythology is quite complicated and usually rather difficult for me to understand. But still, I quickly succumb to the special atmosphere that emanates from places like this and try to pause there for a while and reflect.

Unfortunately, just like Senso-ji, Matsuchiyama Shoden was destroyed during World War II and had to be rebuilt in 1961. But even today it clearly stands out from the surrounding cityscape. And that was probably the reason why we also wanted to pay our respects there that day.

On this warm spring day, there were a number of visitors on site, but they all seemed to be quite relaxed. After all, we weren't in a hurry, so we took a little spin around the site.

![IMG_1297.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/maxinpower/Ep1Xs8TzYYZy3JhTV6fDepqBhm2TX1uZSCDnakjYoHzr2xmEczdoC7ziUme5Gcixqyk.JPG)

As usual, there were enough photogenic spots and once again I couldn't resist taking too many photos. But that's why I'm able to show you a little bit of this place now.

![IMG_1298.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/maxinpower/Eos2L5qod1DmCU16FRnjwmtNyYWYMYdJNpfLzwmCg1nfndYiTk3MWC8pxs37EvRvhsR.JPG)

As I said before, the temple is located on a small hill, but it must have been a bit bigger in earlier times. At least, that's how it appears when you look at one of the historical ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Now we are already in front of the main building, where most visitors say their prayers. Although Matsuchiyama Shoten is technically a Buddhist temple, it also has strong ties to the other Japanese religion, Shintoism.

On a tour of the complex, you'll notice daikon images in many places, showing the Japanese radish. Like here on this lantern, you keep stumbling across the popular root vegetable all over the site.

![IMG_1293.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/maxinpower/EoChhog7cbQsbd9DdeTuPgWXriwphjAJxvVcCNBn571yBs2f6fLYjwXHH9htndkRiDE.JPG)

The daikon is featured on the temple's woodwork, lanterns, rain chains, and also rainwater containers, and can even be purchased on the temple grounds.

The reason seems to be the symbolism that is in the daikon. This simple vegetable symbolizes well-being, harmony in the family and between spouses, as well as luck in finding a partner and fertility. As a symbol, the radish probably fits well with the temple's legend of redemption and salvation.

From up here, we could even see the Sumida River and also the giant Skytree television tower stretching towards the sky on the other side of the river. The Skytree was a constant companion here in Asakusa and we were always happy to spot it.

To finish, we have a picture of the garden, which stretched in front of the administration building of the temple. A small paradise in the middle of the bubbling Japanese capital. And it is exactly such paradises and oases that I am looking for on my trips and I am always happy and excited when I get to enjoy such sights.

In retrospect, our trip to Matsuchiyama Shoten was too short and I would have liked to stay there a little longer. But still, this place has imprinted itself in my memories and I intend to stop by here again on a next visit to Tokyo and Asakusa. It will probably take a while until I will be back, but I'm already looking forward to it....
