Lazy Saturday morning on the terrace.//I’m starting to upgrade my coffee equipment (sort of).

Well, to be honest this isn’t the best morning, also, the last night wasn’t a good one at all. I and my wife went in bed relatively late, about 00:30 and one hour later the little guy decided it was good time to cry and be awake. This is maybe due to his teeth coming out, but really, we didn’t get any sleep until 3 in the morning. Of course, his older brother was sleeping very well and he was awake and ready to party at about 7 in the morning. I try to stay in a good mood, because the things can get worse at any time. One of the things that can help me stay happy is the coffee in the morning, of course.

In my last delivery I wasn’t quite sure which coffees to pick, and I ended up buying the Ethiopia Wonago. I was sure that I haven’t enjoyed this coffee for a while, but right after I went back home with the coffee, I saw that we have an open packet of this exact coffee with less than 20 grams of coffee remaining. I guess that this is a sign of a really good and tasty coffee, when I pick the same variety every time, without being actually aware of that, right? 😁

The coffee is really refreshing and a great start of the day, especially when there wasn’t much sleep in the night. The fruitful combination of blueberry, blackberry and grapes is totally perfect, if you tend to prefer the fruitful coffee varieties rather than chocolate/nut flavors.

You may ask where is the terrace from the topic of this post? Well, mornings are quite cold in Bulgaria now and it’s not very suitable to take out the kids at about 10 degrees centigrade. So the first coffee in the morning was enjoyed in the living room. Now it’s already 10:30 in the morning and outside is very pleasant. Time for an espresso!

It’s very nice that we have this wide and spacious balcony where we can enjoy the spring weather with the kids. There is nothing better than some fresh air and activities that cannot be practices inside for some reasonable issues.

The big brother is now playing with this now popular kinetic sand, and if I had to describe this whole situation with a single word it would be, for sure - mess! This “sand” literally goes everywhere and the only possibility to keep the house clean is to play with it only outside, on the terrace.

The good part is that he likes playing with the sand a lot and there’s a moment of peacefulness. We already start enjoying staying on the terrace because all the surroundings are very green already and our flowers start blooming. That moment is perfect for the whole family. The kids are happy and the parents are happy too!

Now, to the coffee in the cup. It’s also a known coffee from the last post. It’s a Kenyan AB coffee and drinking it this week, I start to see some concerns. With time coffees start to oxidize and their fresh flavors are gradually fading out. Although I keep my ground coffees airtight, they still keep on degrading in time. It’s not by a great extent, but degradation is a real factor. So what is the best prevention to that? Of course, grinding your coffee right before brewing it.

The problem is, that that if you want some high quality grinder, you have to pay a premium price for it. After all, I’m not brewing coffee commercially in a coffee shop so I have to find a balanced grinder. First, it has to deliver a uniform grinding and the price has to be relatively low, to fit my budget. In the last year I have found one grinder that will work fine for me, but it has one issue.

The Baratza encore is a very good and cheap entry level grinder, but it cannot go fine enough to brew a good espresso. For v60 loitering, it would be ideal, but as I drink both espresso and V60 coffees in my home, I really want the grinder to be espresso capable too! So that is really some sort of issue. Although my espresso machine has a pressurized portafilter and it can brew relatively well a coarser grinds too, I prefer to pick a more capable grinder. The tricky part is that this grinder is not available in Bulgaria, so I really cannot purchase it.

Wilfa Svart is a grinder that is very similar to the previous one, it’s similarly priced, at about 120-130 euro, and the best part is that I found a shop where I can purchase this one from. But really, it has the same disadvantage. It cannot grind fine enough for great
espresso shots. If I’m okay with the “problem” of these grinders, I will most probably order the Wilfa Svart grinder. I guess I will have to rethink this again and then consider this purchase. After all I’m buying something that will serve me for a great deal of time.

The choice will be hard, but it will be with for sure! Fresh ground coffee beans really cannot compare to pre-ground beans. That’s a fact that everyone with just a little knowledge about coffee is aware of.

Well mate, I hope those teeth come through and you're a bit more rested for the night ahead! Not sure how I feel about a fruity coffee; is that something a bit alternate? (Or, is it just my lack of education about how to describe beans - thought it was more of a wine thing!)

Coffee is unique and trained coffee experts can distinguish thousands of different aromas and tastes in it. The only thing that compares with coffee in the means of different tastes is wine, as far as I know. Of course, these flavors are not artificially added. Most of the coffees that we know are the traditional tasting ones, but every coffee farm picks its best cherries among the others, which is maybe about 5% of the whole yield, and this coffee is processed more carefully. This is the specialty coffee, which is so full of different flavors. After finding this coffee I really cannot go back to ordinary coffee 😁

We miss the early nights as parents now… And late weekend wake ups too! Flowers on a boat surely sounds very interesting. After all, why not? You’ll get some natural colors to your space!

I have one manual grinder, but I really was not happy with its results. Although the coffee is freshly ground, it was not even ground at all. There were both very tiny particles and some bigger chunks.

Hiya 😁

I had an early night last night. Midnight sharp and I woke up at 08:00...I'm feeling good.
I feel your pain though because he'll more than likely be waking up more frequently if he's just teething.

Beautiful flowers there. I never had plans to plant pretty flowers on the boat, just herbs, but I might reconsider getting some plants that are dual-purpose and effective as an insect repellent.

This remains me to stop by TK Maxx to see if there is any manual coffee grinder. If not I might check Argos.
I had a heavy duty one in the Philippines that could grind all size grains. I do miss it sometimes.
