[Picture Source](https://pixabay.com/en/dna-double-helix-model-minor-groove-scie-694798/) >**The human structure is composed in a form of a working DNA and it functions differs from one individual to the other.** *The DNA is made of several chromosomes which is responsible for human growth, abilities, character and behavioural patterns. That is why the way DNA works, it is very rare if not impossible to find two individuals have the same genetic make up.* [Picture Source](https://pixabay.com/en/man-dna-spiral-biology-merge-points-patt-2125123/) Scientific research and methods through the help of scientists on research as unravel the mystery behind data storage and the connectivity with the cells in the *Deoxyribonucleic acid acronym DNA.* And in this post we are going to analyse the followings; *1. Data Storage and its relevance* *2. Importance of Data Storage* *3. What is DNA and its components* *4. The hypothesis of DNA being a vital/veritable source of Data Storage.* **WHAT IS DATA STORAGE AND ITS RELEVANCE** Data storage is a source for archiving files that are primarily meant for secondary purposes for the usage of computer or devices. That is, those files are permanently stored for a very long time. Although, we have several methods to which data can be stored, but for the purpose of our post we are not going to delve into that perse. [Picture Source](https://pixabay.com/en/usb-flash-memory-drive-digital-3172390/) [Picture Source](https://pixabay.com/en/hdd-hard-disk-drive-disk-hard-disk-data--154463/) [Picture Source](https://pixabay.com/en/dvd-cd-rom-compact-disc-cd-digital-disc--152917/) Although, we have two broad category of Data storage which are **“Hard data storage and Remote data storage”** but we have two prominent storage and they are; **Random Access Memory (RAM)- a volatile primary storage and Read Only Memory (ROM)- a non volatile primary storage** While other storage sources are *Solid State Drive (SSD), Network Attached Storage (NAS), USB Thumb Drive/Flash Drive, Cloud storage* Raw files and processed files are stored on these sources of storage and kept for a longer period of time. To the effect that data cannot be lost so far the files are intact. **RELEVANCE/IMPORTANCE OF DATA STORAGE** Technically, data storage has played a vital role in information processes and its relevance cannot be underestimated. The relevance or importance of archiving our files and data are as follows; *1. Basically, data are being stored permanently for record purposes and also for research purposes.* *2. Files can be misplaced, lost at any point in time or even get burnt by inferno, in order to safeguard the data or files from inferno. We store them permanently in a drive.* *3. Some files are in a working state i.e unprocessed files and the only way to keep them is via storage.* **WHAT IS THE COMPONENTS OF A DNA** The genetic makeup of an human being is dependent on the formation of his or her DNA. It has three categories of chemical compositions: that is phosphate, a sugar called deoxyribose, and four nitrogenous bases- adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. These two bases i.e adenine and guanine, have a double-ring form or characteristic of a type of chemical called a *purine.* While the other bases, cytosine and thymine, have a single-ring form of a type called a *pyrimidine.* Holistically, the components of DNA are arranged into categories called **nucleotides.** Each of them are composed of a phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar molecule, and also one of the mentioned four bases above. **HYPOTHESIS THAT DNA WILL BE A VITAL SOURCE OF STORAGE** In science, we call a research hypothesis (i.e it is capable of being a guess not of certainty). According to the Microsoft Research team and the University of Washington, they have discover a file system for DNA. This approach is a one step closer to using DNA for data storage, but it’s not certain to replace the form SSD, RAM or ROM. Most of human cells contain a complete set of instructions that are found in the DNA which build up a person genetically. Due to the remarkable density of a DNA, scientists have been on a research for decades now on how to develop a storage technology that could oust the storage of other types of data. Although, the process isn't moving at the speed of light but the Microsoft team and the University of Washington have cracked the code to make DNA a veritable storage medium. [Picture Source](https://www.google.com.ng/search?q=dna+as+a+mode+of+storage+picture&client=ms-android-tecno&prmd=inv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiDovq-kMjZAhXCSBQKHYCWDGcQ_AUIESgB&biw=360&bih=560#) >*The structural pattern of a DNA will be a vital role for storage of data because it can be written into molecules which are denser than the basic elements of the conventional storage technologies combined together, says Karin Strauss, Microsoft's lead researcher on the project, which also involves researchers from the University of Washington.* DNA will oust magnetic tapes as the potential and durable source, which is the standard mechanism for long-term data storage. In order to access the data encoded in DNA, we need to break it up into shorter sequences, as there is no path to read a full or unbroken pieces of DNA. This is scary as it is exciting. Please how will the data be stored on the DNA. I'm really interested in that part.
