भारत में तैंतीस करोड़ देवी-देवता माने जाते हैं । किन्तु केवल शंकर को ‘महादेव’ कहा जाता है । क्यों ?

एक बार जब समुंद्र-मन्थन हुआ । अमृत तथा विष दोनों ही उसमें से निकले । अमृत का पान करने के लिए तो सब प्रस्तुत हुए, किन्तु विष-पान कौन करे ? शंकर ने ही उस भयंकर विष को अपने कंठ में धारण किया । किसी ने कहा है – 
**<center>मनुज दुग्ध से, दनुज रुधिर से,</center>**
**<center>अमर सुधा से जीते हैं ।</center>**
**<center>इस जगती का कालकूट तो</center>**
**<center>शिव शंकर ही पीते हैं ।।</center>**

इसी प्रकार वे मानव जो कटु वचन अथवा कटु व्यवहार रूपी विष को प्रसन्नता पूर्वक पी जाते हैं – इस विश्व में महान बन जाते है ।

जैसे पहले कहा था कि बैर से बैर शान्त नहीं होता । उससे तो वह बढ़ता ही है । वैरभाव को, शत्रुता को समाप्त करने का एकमात्र उपाय क्षमा ही है । महाभारत का दृष्टान्त इस कथन को स्पष्ट करता है –

युद्ध के अंतिम दिन, जब दुर्योधन अपने जीवन की अंतिम श्वास ले रहा था, अश्वत्थामा ने उससे पूछा – “आपके मन में क्या है ? आपकी यह दशा क्यों हो रही है ?” दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया – “मेरा जीवन दीपक बुझने ही वाला है, किन्तु मेरा जीव अपने स्थान पर नहीं जा रहा है । मुझे शांति नहीं मिल रही है । मुझे शांति तभी मिल सकती है जब मैं एक बार पांचो पाण्डवों के धड़ देख लूं ।”

दुर्योधन की इच्छा पूर्ति के लिए अश्वत्थामा ने अंधेरी रात्रि में चुपचाप पाण्डवों की छावनी में पहुंच कर पंच महापुरुषों के मस्तक काट डाले । रक्त से सने हुए उन पंच धड़ों को कपड़े में लपेट कर वह शीघ्रता से दुर्योधन के पास ले आया । दूर से देखकर दर्योधन प्रसन्न हुआ, किन्तु कपड़ा हटाकर देखने पर उसे निराशा हुई । वे पाण्डव नहीं, द्रौपदी के पुत्र थे । दुर्योधन का उनसे वैर नहीं था, वे तो उसी के पुत्र समान थे । उसका वैर तो पाण्डवों से था । अन्त में इसी शोक में उसकी मृत्यु हो गयी ।

इधर पाण्डवों की छावनी में हाहाकार मच गया । द्रौपदी करुण क्रंदन करने लगी । पाण्डवों के ह्रदय पर घोर आघात पहुंचा । द्रौपदी ने यह प्रतिज्ञा की कि यदि मैं अपने पुत्रों के हत्यारे का वध न करूँ तो स्वयं चिता में जल मरूंगी । भीम, अर्जुन तथा श्रीकृष्ण ने वध करने वाले की खोज की । अश्वत्थामा को पकड़ कर वे द्रौपदी के पास ले आये । भीम ने तलवार द्रौपदी को देते हुए कहा कि वह अपने पुत्रों के अधम हत्यारे का वध कर दे । पृथ्वी पर ऐसे नीच हत्यारे को रहने का अधिकार नहीं है ।

किन्तु द्रौपदी का मातृ-ह्रदय जागृत हो चूका था । उसने भीम से कहा – “आपने मेरे पुत्रों के हत्यारे को पकड़ कर लाकर अपने अनुकूल ही वीर-कर्म किया है । किन्तु इन्हें देखकर और इन्हें इस तलवार की तरफ देखते हुए देखकर मुझे इनकी माता ‘कृपी’ का ख्याल आता है । उसका तो कोई अपराध नहीं है । मैं उसे पुत्र-विहीन क्यों करूँ ? ... इन्हें मैं क्षमा करती हूं । छोड़ दीजिए इन्हें ।”

अश्वत्थामा लज्जा और पश्चात्ताप से पानी-पानी हो गया ।

द्रौपदी ने वैर से वैर को शान्त नहीं किया । वैर से क्या कभी उसका वैर शान्त हो सकता था ? उसने प्रेम और क्षमा से उसे सदा-सदा के लिए शान्त कर दिया ।

अस्तु, क्षमा एक महान तप है । उसके प्रभाव से प्राणी अपने जीवन को सन्मार्ग पर ले जाता है । भारत इस इतिहास ऐसे उत्कृष्ट उदाहरणों से भरा पड़ा है । महावीर भगवान को संगम देव ने छह मास तक घोर उपसर्ग दिया । किन्तु महावीर तो ‘महावीर’ थे । क्षमा उनका सबसे महान अस्त्र था । उसी अस्त्र से उन्होंने उस क्रोधी और भटके हुए देव को परास्त किया । वह देव उनके चरणों में पूजाभाव लिये हुए आया और उसे जीवन का सच्चा मार्ग मिला ।

इसलिए क्षमा से बड़ा कोई कोई तप नहीं है ।
