In black and white CineTV contest-Memories
The CineTV community is hosting a contest this week called CineTV :MEMORIES where we are invited to post about 
***your experience falling in love with a movie (or a tv show) as a kid.***

***I remember***

Saturday morning cartoons were a much anticipated event in my childhood home. In the 1950s and early 1960s we had a black and white 10 inch screen TV that we were not allowed to sit close to for fear it would damage our eyes. My father monopolized the TV in the evening with news shows and documentary style programing that held little interest for my brother and I, so when Saturday's came we never missed watching the cartoons that were offered. Heckle and Jeckle, Mighty Mouse, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, Popeye... and the list goes on. 

We watched that little black and white screen for far too many years because my dad's best friend worked for the telephone company and my dad considered him a tech expert. He told my dad not to buy a color TV  because 'they will be coming out with better ones soon'. 

My grandparents did not listen to that advice and bought a big new color TV long before we had one.

My grandmother Bernice and their new TV. She watched her favorite soap operas every afternoon. 

Our lunch hour during school was actually an hour long, and because we were a mile from the school my mom always was there waiting for us with the car to take us home for lunch, usually soup and a sandwich that she had waiting for us. While we ate we watched a locally produced children's show with Roddy Mac who played his guitar and sang children's songs. 

The first time I watched the Wizard of Oz magically go from black and white to color was with the neighbor kids on their color TV. 

All these years later I may still be a little resentful of my dad's friend for causing us to be one of the last families that I knew who did not have color TV, long after all my friends did. 

The first full length movie that I remember intentionally watching and loving was **Brigadoon**.

It was based on the 1947 Broadway musical about a magical Scottish village that only appeared once every 100 years for one day and New Yorkers    Tommy Albright (Gene Kelly) and Jeff Douglas (Van Johnson) stumble upon it when they get lost in the Scottish Highlands. I was enchanted by the singing, dancing, and romance and it was the film that started my passion for Broadway and many trips to New York city. 

I've passed that love onto my granddaughter who loves to be on stage and is making her first trip to NY next summer to see a show on Broadway.

I have not watched this particular movie, or maybe i was not born yet.lolz. its good to know the movie inspired you this much to have passed it down to your grandchildren. I believe it was something of pride owning a tv then despite it was black and white

Cartoons were the BEST !  Every Saturday at our house too.

Color TVs were great, but amazingly, I was so use to the black and white TVs that it didn't seem to lessen the enjoyment that there was no color ! I can't remember what age I was when a color TV replaced the black and white.  I tried to think on it, but no recall !

Those were the days !

I'm not sure how old I was when we got a color TV set, either, but I think I was old enough to no longer be glued to the TV on Saturday mornings. I think my little brother enjoyed more color cartoons than I did.

My mother tells great stories from the time when TV here in the interior of Brazil was something rare and only common in rich people's homes. I remember her telling me that when the man went to the moon, everyone on the entire block gathered at the house of the only person who had a TV at home, and of course, black and white. My movie memory itself came in color, but I remember those TVs still with a wooden box, the first one we had at home. Hehe.
