What is WOKE?
As of lately this seems to be a question people are struggling to answer. I sincerely don't know why it's hard to do so, but it seems I'm in the minority.

# Point scoring and utter stupidity

I would love to see an argument being made that had some meat, something of value to discern, but it seems that is not in the game plan for the talking heads.

The people that direct, if you will, public opinion, are always trying to find the next "GOT YOU" moment, the next POINT to be scored to show everyone how they are on the right team.

It should should be obvious that this point scoring is just plain stupid and it does nothing to help absolutely anyone.

Or, more fun, more clickbaity... I can try to make you define words like gender, like woman, like woke, like MAGA, etc, and attempt to make you trip to then ridicule you online.

Is this not obvious? Can't we see how we are baiting into division by those who benefit from our attention?

On top of that, defining these things are not even hard. You can even say there's a level of objectivity in the definitions. As much is there can be, of course, because life is subjective interpretation. 

For the sake of proving a point, I'll try to define it, and maybe if you read this, and you want to discuss issues, we can do so without the pointless word-definition bouts. 

# What is woke?

Woke seems to be a social political movement that focuses on being overly righteous. It loses sight of practicality most of the time, and it more often that not it tends to hurt the very thing they are fighting for. 

An expected evolution of social justice warrior types, who tend to be easily misguided, as noble as their intentions might be. 

For all the things about society it touches, it seems to value identity politics more than substance and rejects for the most part notions of merit.

Am I wrong?

So nuanced until the very definition of woke that is used by those who seek to sew division. The very people whose vested interests are not those of the people at large but the ones interested in keeping the proles at each others throats. 

I prefer one of the original terms to describe what woke, that is "being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice" 

I would like to think that I fall into this category and have described myself as being woke on more than one occasion. I am far from an easily misguided SJW but I do hate seeing bigotry and prejudice being glibly explained away by the ones who perpetuate it accusing those who highlight their transgressions of being woke. Dog whistling at its finest.

I was doing "their job" so to speak. The context here is that the right wingers can't say what they mean by woke, so I'm "helping" them.

I don't disagree with  you, and I don't even have negativity towards the ideas of equality. The thing is, when it comes to public discourse, definitions evolve, externally to us that is.

I'll give you an example. I thought I was a feminist. I mean, I believe women are equally valuable to society and deserve the respect and opportunities men have had for centuries. But, in public discourse feminism, at least the word, is being used to say "man hating" inverse the roles of oppression. 

If that is how public discourse defines feminism, If I am to speak their language, I'm not a feminist. I could sit there and say, as you have, that I'm a traditional feminist (if there is such thing), but It would be important I clarify my position when needed. 

Same goes for woke. Socially I lean left quite a  bit myself. I believe people should be allowed to identify themselves as they want. I think racism is one of those ridiculous things holding our species behind. I would be right there with someone trying to change the unfair dynamics. 

But that is not how woke is being used. The word woke is being used to describe how all of the sudden they grabbed Scooby Doo's Telma, made her black, made her lesbian and packaged the whole show in terrible comedy. 

If I was speaking to you, I would not call that woke, since that is not how you use the term, hence why knowing your audience is so important. 

I hope my point is coming across a little better.

What's most confusing about "woke" is to what degree those who might be described as such are willing to own the term. Its origin was genuine afaik, but its stupid past-tense conjugation meant it was more easily used in a derogatory way. Some people still seem to use it about themselves, and that may be gaining in popularity over time. It's become a very common derogatory label for people who are at the very least unwilling to agree with the blob of collectivist-oriented groupthink.

And yes you're right that it mostly applies to identity politics. In fact the phenomenon tries to absorb as many issues as it can into identity politics. The more divisive it can make things, the better its chances of survival. It's almost like an autonomous consciousness distributed among people who subscribe.

Languages are living things... words sometimes get re-worked into ways we don't like, but there are no effective ways of protecting languages from changing.

What woke means today, more so in the context of our current political climate is a far cry from what it meant when it began being used by the Populus. And I suspect it will change again.

Debating definitions however, is a sure way of not getting any systematic change done. It's like arguing about what are the best cables to use for to plug guitars but never strumming a single chord, all while calling ourselves respected musicians.
