Ethereum Public vs Private Chains:

There is a lot of misinformation regarding private vs public Ethereum chains. The relationship is almost identical to intranet vs. internet.

Think about before the internet had fully formed, companies had intranets that connected all their office computers together. 

Once everyone agreed on a standard protocol (http, TCP/IP, etc) the world wide web was formed Netscape allowed people to connect to the internet. It wasn't owned by any one person so no one had a kill switch or total control of it.

Eventually, companies wanted to interact with each other. Imagine IBM and Microsoft were working on a collaborative project & wanted to share designs with each other. They used the public internet to connect each of their network clusters together Public internet has way more security than any companies own "Internet".

This is why AOL failed, it tried to keep you closed in their garden wall version of the internet instead of allowing developers to innovate.

I see this exact same scenario playing out between public and private Ethereum chains within the next few years.
