Lying is an ugly thing, we can't deny that. A person who lies gives up credibility and the trust of other people. I believe there are three types of people when it comes to lying. There are those who avoid lying at all costs, regardless of the situation, those who are sensitive and lie when necessary, and those who lie so much that they get lost in their own story. But I'm not here to lecture you, I'm here to tell you a story in which I had to lie and, believe it or not, it happened last night.

I'm not a saint, but if there's one thing I've avoided all my life, it's lying. I'm from the time when a word has more value than a contract, and if my word is false, it loses its value. That's why I live by this philosophy. But of course, sometimes a lie has fewer bad consequences than the truth and can contain some bigger problems. 

Last night, my girlfriend had a lot of back pain, which had been going on for three days. As her pain wouldn't go away, the best decision was to go to the doctor to see what was going on. We left the house after dark to go to a hospital very close to where we live. When we got there, I learned that this hospital only treated trauma-related emergencies. We didn't know for sure what the pain was and that it definitely wasn't caused by trauma, and when I told the attendant about it, a strange situation occurred.

The attendant said that my girlfriend could only be seen if she had fallen or if something had hit her. As that wasn't the case, she told us that we should go to another hospital, but that hospital was a long way from where we live and it was already late. Imagine that it would take us an hour just to get to this other hospital and no less than three hours to be seen. The receptionist saw my desperation when she told me the news and said: "Look, I can put it here on the form that she's had a fall, but you'll need to confirm this with the doctor". Well, given the urgency and the possibility of my girlfriend being seen more quickly and not having to go to the other hospital, I didn't think twice and agreed that I would lie to the doctor. After all, if I told the truth, it would also hurt the receptionist who had lied to help us.

I can't deny that, despite the relief of solving this problem and providing more comfort for my girlfriend who was in pain, I felt a guilty conscience for doing it. As I said before, I don't like lying and I really feel bad about it. Even in situations like this, I get upset. But in the end, things worked out: my girlfriend was seen, we lied to the doctor according to the script, we bought the medicine that relieved her pain and we went home.

There are occasions like yesterday that leave me with a guilty conscience, but it's not something serious and I know that. The problem is that sometimes some people use lying as an easy way to get what they need. Lying is sometimes easier for those who don't care, but letting it corrupt us is something that should be avoided.

Mentira é algo feio, não podemos negar isso. Uma pessoa que mente abre mão de credibilidade e da confiança das outras pessoas. Eu acredito que existem três tipos de pessoas quando o assunto é mentira. Há aquelas que evitam mentir a todo custo, independentemente da situação, aquelas que possuem uma sensibilidade e mentem quando necessário, e aquelas que mentem tanto que se perdem na própria história. Mas não estou aqui para dar lição de moral, e sim para contar uma história em que tive que mentir e, acredite se quiser, isso aconteceu na noite de ontem.

Eu não sou um santo, mas se tem algo que evitei por toda a minha vida é mentir. Sou do tempo em que a palavra tem mais valor do que um contrato, e se minha palavra é falsa, ela perde seu valor. Por isso, vivo essa filosofia de vida. Mas claro que, em alguns momentos, uma mentira tem menos consequências ruins do que a verdade e pode conter alguns problemas maiores. 

Na noite de ontem, minha namorada estava com muitas dores na coluna, que já duravam três dias. Como a dor dela não passava, a melhor decisão seria ir ao médico para ver o que estava acontecendo. Saímos de casa já escurecendo para ir a um hospital que fica bem próximo de onde moramos. Quando chegamos lá, fiquei sabendo que esse hospital só tratava de urgências relacionadas a traumas. Não sabíamos ao certo do que se tratava essa dor e que definitivamente ela não foi causada por algum trauma, e quando falei isso para a atendente, ocorreu uma situação estranha.

A atendente disse que minha namorada só poderia ser atendida se ela tivesse caído ou se algo tivesse dado uma pancada nela. Como não foi isso que aconteceu, ela nos disse que deveríamos ir a outro hospital, só que esse outro hospital era muito longe de onde moramos e já era tarde. Imagine que, só para chegar a esse outro hospital, levaríamos uma hora e, para ser atendido, não seria menos de três horas. A recepcionista viu meu desespero quando me deu a notícia e então disse: "Olha, eu posso colocar aqui na ficha que ela levou um tombo, mas você vai precisar confirmar isso com o médico". Bem, devido à urgência e à possibilidade de minha namorada ser atendida mais rápido e não precisar ir para o outro hospital, eu não pensei duas vezes e concordei que mentiria para o médico. Afinal, se eu contasse a verdade, também prejudicaria a recepcionista que mentiu para nos ajudar.

Não nego que, apesar do alívio em resolver esse problema e proporcionar mais comodidade para minha namorada que estava com dor, senti a consciência pesada por fazer isso. Como disse antes, não gosto de mentir e realmente me sinto mal por isso. Mesmo em situações como essa, fico chateado. Mas no final, as coisas deram certo: minha namorada foi atendida, mentimos para o médico conforme o script, compramos o remédio que aliviou suas dores e voltamos para casa.

Existem ocasiões como a que aconteceu ontem que me deixam com a consciência pesada, mas não é algo grave e sei disso. O problema é que, às vezes, algumas pessoas usam a mentira como uma forma fácil de obter o que precisam. Mentir às vezes é mais fácil para quem não se importa, mas deixar que ela nos corrompa é algo que deve ser evitado.
