What's next after SMT's and Communities?
![FutureAErender (0-00-00-00).jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTmnRcz8XxqM3vVffSHLNLm7yaXDWjKp5RnhuguAiLegV/FutureAErender%20(0-00-00-00).jpg)

Fingers crossed that within the next few weeks we’ll be looking at Communities and hopefully a few months after that we'll have SMTs, but what comes next? What should be the next major development for the STEEM blockchain?

I think it should be a major update to Condenser and the direction it needs to go is becoming more modular. Once we have SMT’s and Communities I think that the focus on STEEM will be less about the general community and more about specific niche communities. In order for these communities to be able to succeed and thrive and have polished user experiences they’ll need an easy solution for creating customized interfaces that fit and empower their particular niche.

I think the model that we should follow is something along the lines of Wordpress and Blogger. If you weren’t much of a blogger before getting on Steem let me explain how they work.

Wordpress and Blogger both sort of act like a base platform then each one also has open marketplaces where individuals can develop their own tools, interfaces, UIs, widgets or whatever the market demands then these things can be integrated on the base platform in a plug and play sort of way.

The reason platforms like WordPress and blogger exploded on the Internet when they came out was because of their accessibility and customization. You didn’t need to understand any sort of programming to create a beautiful, professional looking blog, all you needed to do was download the components that you needed, plug them in and they just worked. The reason these platforms aren’t used as much anymore is because social media came along and made for a much more connected user experience. These blogs were all islands by themselves and suffered many of the same issues as STEEM, which is primarily a lack of engagement and content discovery. So social media was something that immediately connected you to the entire world filling in a much needed gap in the blogging experience by connecting you with everyone. Then the discovery problem was solved with the invention of “The Feed”. Social media also focused on sharing vs creating some sort of content which again creates more accessibility. Most people are not content creators.

Here on Steem we have the ability to serve all of these use cases, but the UX and UI need to match the intended use. Since the potential use cases are practically infinite we need to decentralize the creation of the UX and UI. There’s also the matter of personal expression and allowing for differentiation.

For example I may want the landing page for my blog to be an all image grid portfolio view, but if you’re a writer you’d probably want a different layout. Maybe you’d want multiple pages for your different types of content, or if you create primarily videos maybe you’d be best served with a layout that looks more Youtuby. All these things are possible here.

I think the real power of open source software is in increasing accessibility. Wordpress, blogger, and later Tumblr were all accessible to the average user, I think that should be our north star. Making it to where a non developer can come to Steem create a custom blog, social circle, community, or SMT without needing to ask questions in Discord or scour the internet for information for hours, or look for a generous mentor to school them. It can be done, but everyone developing, investing, promoting and using Steem needs to understand that how an application makes you feel is JUST as important as how well it functions and having options feels good. I think the fastest path to creating as many options as possible is pushing Condenser to just being a foundation to build on, then decentralizing the rest.

What do you think?

Hmm, I don't know. I asked myself too what will come after SMTs. Lately Steem and the ecosystem has been trying hard to become more broad instead of more focused. Good, bad, we will see. Games are not blogging. Neither are other dapps recently developed. While I enjoy the blogging aspect of Steem, to focus on lifting the blogging UX and UI to the likes of Wordpress would demand pretty much sacrificing the rest and probably never catching up to WP.

What makes you think that? It's not as if the people developing on Steem are working as some sort of collective or company. It's a bunch of individuals doing their own thing. If Steemit focused on pushing Condenser in this direction it would have zero effect on Splinterlands, Appics, gambling apps, Steem Engine, etc.

Steemit, Inc. means a dozen or so people, most of them blockchain devs. On interface, at most 3 guys work. How is that a match for WP, and I don't mean Automation, the company behind the WP backbone, but all the other devs that create themes, plugins and more.

well oddly enough .. the current condenser is built on a WP theme that was modified for use on the blockchain. Learned that at a Witness Chat ... so once Steemit Inc turns its attention to interface more a lot could happen. If you take a look at the Engrave project, they are developing themes for people to use.

Isn't that something? I didn't know that. :)

> once Steemit Inc turns its attention to interface more a lot could happen

I'm not sure about that. They had many employees not blockchain core related, but not any more. And using the blockchain devs to work on the interface I believe is misusing their skills. Like using a large structures architect to build a house.

> If you take a look at the Engrave project, they are developing themes for people to use.

Yep, I know Engrave and I really like it. If it lifts off, yes, they can provide a professional blogging alternative to steemians, comparable at least partly to Wordpress.

Bring in ease of use and marketing. Simple to join, build a community and tokenize it for the regular Joe. That's what is really needed for people to join in a big way. Crypto for the regular folk just like wordpress made websites easy for the regular folk.

Most people don't have the knowledge, skills or interest to build from the ground up so they just want plug and play which wordpress do brilliantly.

I am hoping it will head in that direction - Steem to become the 'Wordpress of the Blockchain'.

Will need some serious work to get there though - but doable if we get the right focus.
