<h2>HACIA EL FUTURO</h2><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Caminaban bajo el intenso sol, arrastrando los pies, con las cabezas cubiertas por gorras y un paño que protegía sus caras y cuellos; pero el sudor ya lo había empapado y la arena había comenzado a pegarse en ellos. Los morrales iban a la espalda y la ilusión aún impulsaba sus cuerpos cansados.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Jacinto movía los ojos como radares, tratando de conseguir infructuosamente una sombra. María oraba por unas nubes que mitigaran la fuerza del sol y dejasen caer un poco de lluvia que refrescase sus cuerpos.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Ambos sabían que era dura la travesía por el desierto, lo habían escuchado de algunos que lloraban a sus muertos y de otros que habían regresado al pueblo derrotados. Pero sus sueños de futuro eran más vigorosos que las desgracias vividas por otros.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Jacinto y María huían de una vida llena de privaciones y de la muerte de su primer y único hijo, querían tener muchos hijos, pero en un lugar donde las dificultades pudiera ser vencidas y los niños crecieran felices.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Atrás sólo quedaba la madre llorosa, abuela de otros nietos que no conocía. De ese espejo huían, confiando en su juventud y fortaleza física. La esperanza había renacido en la anciana con los sueños de su hija y su yerno. Y ellos sabían que no se cansaría de orar para que llegasen a un lugar seguro.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Ya estaban en su quinta jornada, caminaban desde el ocaso hasta las primeras horas de la mañana, pues la luna llena les permitía adelantar camino sin sufrir los quemantes rayos del sol. Por eso habían iniciado el recorrido del desierto en esa fase lunar.</div><p></p> <div class="text-justify"><em>Aproximadamente  siete jornadas</em>, les habían dicho. Pero sabían que era un tanto impredecible, pues la fatiga iba reduciendo el rendimiento de la marcha.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">Esta quinta jornada se estaba prolongando, pues no había ninguna sombra a la vista y el agua tenían que ahorrarla. Acostarse en la arena caliente, con los rayos del sol directamente sobre sus cuerpos sería una nefasta decisión. No hablaban, sólo arrastraban los pies hacia adelante y exploraban con la miraba alrededor.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Fue María quien divisó primero unos peñascos. Ella sólo señaló. Jacinto siguió la seña y ambos se abrazaron con alegría. Sus pies ya no se arrastraron. Jacinto la tomó de la mano y caminaron con la mayor rapidez  que pudieron.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Ya estaban a tiro de fusil de los peñascos y fue un tiro de fusil lo que los hizo detenerse. Se miraron y tocaron buscando una posible herida. La bala no los había tocado.</div><p></p> <div class="text-justify"> Jacinto se quitó el paño que le protegía la cara y lo ondeó con el brazo varias veces, en señal de paz. Era arriesgado, pero tampoco tenían muchas alternativas a la vista. Asumió el riesgo, aunque María lo miraba aterrada.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">- Conversaron unos instantes. <em>No querían matarnos, al menos no todavía. Tal vez ahuyentarnos, si se seguimos acercándonos lo sabremos, pues volverán a disparar</em>- opinó Jacinto. Rosa se apoyó en él y , venciendo el temor, siguieron caminando en línea recta hacia las piedras.</div><p></p> 
<div class="text-justify">Al llegar, los recibió con cautela un grupo de socorristas armados, que tenía como misión auxiliar a los migrantes que utilizaban aquella ruta para acceder a una vida nueva. Los revisaron primero, les ofrecieron agua y comida después y, finalmente,  les pidieron la documentación, cosa que la pareja había cuidado de llevar en sus morrales.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Se abrazaron llenos de felicidad, corrieron las lágrimas,  estaban seguros de encontrarse en el inicio de un nuevo destino.<div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">They walked under the intense sun, dragging their feet, with their heads covered by caps and a cloth that protected their faces and necks; but the sweat had already soaked him and the sand had begun to stick to them. The backpacks were on their backs and the illusion still propelled their tired bodies.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Jacinto moved his eyes like radars, trying unsuccessfully to get a shadow. María prayed for some clouds that would mitigate the force of the sun and let fall a little rain that would refresh their bodies.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Both knew that the journey through the desert was hard, they had heard it from some who mourned their dead and from others who had returned to town defeated. But his dreams of the future were stronger than the misfortunes experienced by others.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Jacinto and María were fleeing a life full of deprivation and the death of their first and only child, they wanted to have many children, but in a place where difficulties could be overcome and children would grow happy.</div><p></p>

<div class = "text-justify"> Behind was only the tearful mother, grandmother of other grandchildren she did not know. From that mirror they fled, trusting in her youth and physical strength. Hope had been reborn in the old woman with the dreams of her daughter and her son-in-law. And they knew she wouldn't tire of praying for them to get to safety.</div> <p> </p>
<div class="text-justify">They were already on their fifth day, walking from sunset until the early hours of the morning, as the full moon allowed them to move ahead without suffering the burning rays of the sun. That is why they had started the journey through the desert in that lunar phase.</div><p></p> <div class="text-justify"><em>Approximately seven days</em>, they had been told. But they knew it was somewhat unpredictable, as fatigue reduced walking performance.</div><p></p>

<div class="text-justify">This fifth day was dragging on, as there was no shade in sight and the water had to be saved. Lying down on the hot sand, with the sun's rays directly on their bodies, would be a dire decision. They didn't speak, just shuffled forward and explored with her looking around.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">It was Maria who first spotted some boulders. She just pointed. Jacinto followed the sign and they both hugged happily. His feet no longer dragged. Jacinto took her by the hand and they walked as fast as they could.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">They were already within rifle range of the boulders and it was a rifle shot that brought them to a halt. They looked and touched looking for a possible wound. The bullet had not touched them.</div><p></p> <div class="text-justify"> Jacinto took off the cloth that protected his face and waved it with his arm several times, as a sign of peace. He was a risk taker, but they didn't have many alternatives in sight either. He took the risk, although Maria looked at him terrified.</div> <p> </p>
<div class="text-justify"> They talked for a few moments. <em>They didn't want to kill us, at least not yet. Maybe scare us away, if they kept getting closer we would know, because they would shoot again</em> - Jacinto said. Rosa leaned on him and they continued walking in a straight line towards the stones.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">Upon arrival, they were cautiously greeted by a group of armed rescuers, whose mission was to help migrants using that route to access a new life. They checked them first, offered them water and food later and, finally, asked for their documentation, which the couple had taken care to carry in their backpacks.</div><p></p>
<div class="text-justify">They hugged each other full of happiness, tears flowed, they were sure to find themselves at the beginning of a new destiny.<div><p></p>
